He played quite a bit of electro. And then he played A TON of the dark, deep, melodic, trancyish tracks (think Digweed in the late 90s). I was expecting to hear some after hearing about him playing it in his LA set, but not nearly as much as we god! Also probably why the crowd was so into it and jumping around. Lots of tracks with buildups and when the track would peak and go off the whole crowd would start hopping around like trance fairies :P
I know he played this stuff in the last hour (or two?) of his LA set but by he was playing it within the first 30-45 minutes of his set here and just kept it going.
IT WAS ING AWESOME. :P |
Yep yep...last hour to 2 hours of diggers in LA was all fast, driving melodic and very HUGE.
You take any pics Dave? |

Yeah, there were positive vibes all over the place, and Ruby is a great venue. I also liked how well ventilated it was.
I like some of the proggier numbers he played, and his mixing was stellar as usual, but the distorted electro bloops covering most of the set unfortunately didn't resonate with me. I was hoping for something like his essential mix last year, and this was much darker, less melodic, and more buzzsaw electro. |
Well, he still played tons of (dark, deep) melodic stuff. And yeah, lots of electro.
But electro is the hot right now. I'm personally pretty picky on what electro stuff I like, and I loved the stuff he was playing last night, personally.
I'm way more critical of progressive nights compared to trance nights and last night's set is way up there with one of the best nights, musically, I've ever experienced.
One thing I noticed is that as the crowd starting clearing out a bit, the sound in the place started to noticeably bounce around more (which made the sound a bit more distorted). And once they cleared out upstairs it was WAY noticeable. Because they have the speakers upstairs stupendously loud (I had to plug my ears when walking near them) and the sound of of them starts bouncing everywhere like crazy ones they clear the people out since peeps stop sound from bouncing around. |

No pics. Only will be out a few more times before taking a few months off for the baby, and, frankly, just want to be able to enjoy the nights w/o worrying about possessions. :p
If I do decide to take photos of anything, will be a spur of the moment decision. :p |

It peaked after 2 and then gradually thinned out a bit. It was still pretty full at 4, but less than the middle of his set. |

I don't know if I'd call it late-90s Digweed material. I can't imagine early Bedrock pressing stuff like he was playing. It had dark progressive overtones, yeah, but the percussion and bass was all punchy like electro, not rolling and fluid like progressive. It was all really boomy and upfront in profile, which isn't like progressive back then, either. I'd even say that some of it leaned toward techno in sound. I haven't heard Transitions yet, but the night seemed to mirror what's on the comp.
Gabriel Ananda - Ihre Persönliche Glücksmelodie and Warung Beach went down really well, along with a few at the end that dropped especially hard.
What was that odd encore track? |

OMFG I DIE :wtf:
I had the best time at Ruby then almost any other night since I've been going to that club!
I was really sad I missed him in January and I'm so glad digweed brought it just as hard last night. The bass almost collapsed that ing building. I was in complete awe throughout his entire set.
It was great seeing Dave and Rich and meeting Esper and the other TAs I was introduced to (sorry i was tipsy so i don't remember everyone).
Digweed is now in my top3 djs...omfg he killed it sooooo hard!
I'm still recovering so I'll post a full review with pics and videos later.
Dave, thanks for getting me on stage at the end because experiencing those last tracks up there and watching the crowd and dancing up to was amazing. I still can't beleive how sick his set was and how much bass dropping!!!
more later....im still euphoric ;)
ps. rich, isa and i are down for Lawler in LA -- myspace me the details or i can just give you me phone # on there. |
