CAA wants government to ban ipods and MP3 players in cars (pg. 11)

jay while i can see your point with being careful about letting the government place bans on things and not letting it get out of hand. however in this case there is a lot of evidence that suggests this may be a good idea.
when ever you learn a new skill it takes a lot of concentration, and attention to achieve the task. at first this may take up most of your concious effort which will not allow you to be able to complete the task well, while also trying to do something else ( fiddle with ipod, talk on the phone etc.) now the more often you do this task the less ammount of concious effort you have to alot to it ( making it more of an automatic process, something you dont have to think about) when you finally get the point where you dont have to REAAAAALLLLLY concentrate on exactly what your doing with your car, this is when you shuold be able to start fiddling with other things. but until you are capable of this you are in danger of error. and this is the reasoning behind the idea of the ban. its not to say that these devices shouldnt be in cars. its that they are distracting to new drivers who are unable to multitask while driving
i see this addition to the graduated liscening program as no different then any other of the rules such as going on the highway, driving at night, having many people in the car etc... |

That doesn't mean that there should be a LAW to wear seat belts or helmets. I'm with most people and wear a seat belt b/c I want to protect myself, but I don't feel the need for there to be a law.
And with your statement on people who are dumb as who wouldn't wear a helment b/c it's not cool...a law isn't going to make them forget about the "coolness" and strap on a helmet. |

Agreed, lol. We all know following the law is even more uncool than wearing the helmet. So amking it mandatory would actually reduce the percentage of people who wear helmets. :p |

yeah I understand that
but what if theorically it would make them obide the law, and hence save some lifes? because in the case of an accident chances a person without a helmet survives are much lower then with the helmet
becauce IF it's a law, they will be fined otherwise, and can't they also have their biking license suspended? |

Have fun with "theoretically" b/c TRUTHFULLY that will not happen. It has been proven. This isn't a perfect world and never will be.
As nice as it is to worry about others and their safety, there's way too many people in this world for you to worry about. So why not just worry about yourself. |

On topic of the thread...
This ban they are talking about would only apply to Novices, which would mean those with only a G1, right? If this is the case, the people with the G1 would legally HAVE to be driving with someone who has had their G for 4 years or longer, most likely being their parents.
Now I would HOPE that the adult accompanying them would be able to decipher whether something was really becoming a distraction to the driver or not, and choose subsequently to remove it or not.
However, being that CAA deals with a lot of accidents, their statistics may show that many G1 drivers are having accidents caused by distractions.
On the whole, I don't think anyone should be on their phone while driving. I thought there was a law about that?
As for music... personally, I find that music makes me a much more relaxed driver.
However, someone ing around with the CD player, or MP3 player is spending far too much time looking at their devices than they are at the road, and being that these kids are new to handling a car, I agree it isn't too bright of an idea.
If they leave this to the G1 drivers, I wouldn't be too upset about this law. They already have MANY restrictions, which I think is fair being that they are only LEARNING how to drive a vehicle, (which can potentially be a VERY dangerous piece of machinery). During the learning stage, they should be concentrating on what they are doing, and getting practice with interactions on the road... not ing around with their ipod. |
