Hard Trance Peaked massivly and then went down hill like 2003.

I'd say hard dance is pretty much in the same boat as trance is in right now.

Maybe you should explore the genre more. The world does not stands or fails with Tiesto, Armin & Pulser.

LOL

are you for real mate?

I've been DJing 11 years. The term "for example" does not imply as if to be the complete summary and basis of all measure! ;)

I just think that trance doesn't sound as new anymore. Not saying current trance sucks, because I like it, but in 1999 I'm sure there were people who only liked trance because it was the "in" thing or because it was new.

the productions were a lot less boring/more exciting. That had a lot to do with it. LOADS less inexperienced bedroom producers too.

yet country is the most popular type of music in the US... MTV doesn't mean anything...

System, i wasn't holding your age against you but just because trance was the cooler thing, on all the charts all the hype was on trance doesn't mean its less popular. More people know about trance today with the help of the internet then in 1999.

Yes the quality may have gone down, but i think the popularity definately has gone up.

CMT? when you have a whole channel for a single genre...it helps. just look at BET and rap.

Trance is WAY less popular now.
Sure the internet has given it extra coverage, but it's not just trance that has been given extra coverage through the internet.. EVERYTHING has been given extra coverage. The number of trance compilations has gone down so low because of how much less popular it became.. compared to the gatecrasher days when things were at an alltime high and where sales went through the roof. Trance clubnights & events also are WAY down in numbers. I used to be the most well established trance DJ in Vancouver as well as the province of B.C., and from someone who's lived through it all I can tell you that the reason I jumped ship is due to the productions getting boring and much worse, as well as the plunging popularity of trance. I'm not interested in playing shows with poor attendance, or having my bookings become sparse due to lack of events to play at, but above all I'm not interested in sticking with a style when the producers are no longer making tracks I love. Now I have only a small amount of trance influence in my sets and usually the times I pull out a trance track to play it's pulling out a classic.. ie: anything pre 2003.

I'm talking about trance as it is in the real world.. not trance as it is from behind a computer.

I still think trance before 1997 sounds better than anything today.

+1 on that... but I still stand by saying that EDM has fragmented into far too many genres for its own good, and that has caused regression in popularity / sales / numbers at gigs.

But on the flip side, genres like breaks, electro (not house) have progressed musically, but more in an "underground" scenario... which for me is far more appealing than a top 20 chart hit.
