Toronto 3rd most polite city in the world?

Perhaps they mistook beaten down and silent for polite?

LOL

Actually Toronto people have a very polite public persona. Ive always said that. Unfortunately i think its due to the fact that people here just dont want to cause a scene because "what would others think of me?"

Europeans will be the first to push you out of the way to get into a train or bud in line. But they will also be the first to invite a stranger for a cup of coffee or show a strange foreigner around their city (happened to me many times) Cant say that about here!

TORONTO (CP) - Among foreigners, Canadians have a reputation for being polite. Well now, Canadians themselves may be surprised to learn that Toronto ranks in a survey as the third most-polite city in the world.

Big and sprawling Hogtown places just behind New York and Zurich in the international Reader's Digest survey. Undercover courtesy detectors - an equal number of men and women - recorded more than 2,000 tests of behaviour in 35 countries to come up with a most courteous list.

Toronto-based freelance writer Ian Harvey was one of the undercover testers for the magazine. He says people shouldn't be surprised that big cities were the top three most courteous places.

Harvey says "courtesy is the social lubricant that allows us - in these densely packed urban areas - to get along with each other." And without it, "we'd be at each other's throats."

Among other things, the courtesy testers walked into public buildings behind people to see if they would hold the door open, and they dropped a folder full of papers in a busy location to see if others would help pick them up.

New York ahead of Toronto? That already proves this survey to be full of crap.

+1

I've been to NY. I don't know what you have to be smoking to say that the people of NY are polite.

From what I've heard though, people on the New York subway aren't afraid to look at eachother and sometimes spark up a convo.

Here in Toronto though; we're deathly afraid of making eye contact with people on the subway.

Ya, but there's nothing wrong with acknowledging someone's existence and at the very least smiling instead of turning away as if you just got booked looking at their boobs.

I go to the Big Apple atleast twice a year. The people on the street, in the subway, anywhere and everywhere are always eager to stop and offer assistance. Some even go out of their way to help u find something (even when they are late for work. They are alot friendlier than people in Toronto. Atleast when ur there you feel that you are in America and everyone around you is American. Canada is like a salad bowl of various cultures and backgrounds. No one looks @ each other and everyone has an invisible shield saying "Back the up and dont touch me" If the city wasnt soo DIRTY and GRIMEY i would prob move there. Besides theres alot more to do than this place and it doesnt snow. I think im hating on Canada a lil too much. Oh well atleast we have the Guv! :haha:

^^ I've never been to NYC but that's how its been described to me. And I have nothing but good things to say about ppl I've met from there. You make some very valid points.

I have always thought of Toronto as an extremely polite city! One of the best IMO!

On that note, since I have been in NYC, the people are neither polite nor rude....they just mind their business. Def not worth being in the top 2 tho!! And for sure not over Toronto:conf:
