I just can't wait for the day when people realise actually how crap most the tunes he plays are.
He has overused his edge which is in the effects and what he does to the tunes with those effects. |

Yeah, most of the stuff he plays is INSANELY repetitive. I liked his ALiVE CD, but god, so much of that cd gave me a headache. He would just loop the same beat over and over again. I give him props for what he has done with cdjs and whatnot...but alot of the tunes he plays are crap. It is hit and miss with me when it comes to JZ, but I can respect him as a DJ. This set wasn't that bad, but it wasn't mindblowing either. I'd love to be able to have the stuff he can...but using filters and loops can't make bad tunes better. I think his sets are more understood and appreciated when they go off in a club environment rather than when you are sitting in front of your computer. |

true, but he's got mixes out there if you just want to chill infront of your computer like 4.2 Part 1 and 2, Essential Mix February 22, 2004, James Zabiela - Live at Lush Afterparty 18-01-02 (Part 1) to name a few.. |

James IMO used to have absolutely brilliant track selection (and that includes ALiVE), altho he's always been known more for his technical skills. Lately i haven't been very impressed by the tracks he picks.
Still have to hear this mix. |

well obviously everything comes down to personal tastes. i enjoyed the set.
tunes like...
Mr Oizo - 'Nazis' (F-Com)
Unknown - 'Minimal Disco'
Max Cavalerra - 'Expect Nothing' (MB Selektions)
Francois Dubois - 'I Try' (White Label)
Depeche Mode - 'John The Revelator (Thiefschwartz Remix)' (White Label)
The Church - 'Under The Milkyway' (Mushroom)
i would hardly consider crap...
maybe his sound does purtain for most people to a club environment only, but eh...to each their own.
i mean i could say the same thing about armin, pvd, tiesto about how i can't wait for people to realize how they play crap and are repetitive as all hell...works either way.
i just think it depends what you look for in a dj. i think james is definitely more of a dj's dj. i mean if you don't understand what he's doing...i don't think most people could appreciate it unless they just have a preference for that style of music. |
