Haha, yeah, US Citizens are slowly starting to watch a real world sport in the form of soccer --- World Cup is being watched by quite a few Americans, and as they say, soccer fans no longer need to ask bar tenders to change the station to Futbol. Perhaps that's the fate of EDM as well --- slowly and surely, it'll catch on.

Definitely not... if anything EDM is decreasing in popularity.

I'm not sure what to say about that one. To me, it always seemed that EDM is the 'World's' music, with Hip-Hop being something of a sometimes pleasant alternative and Rock being a dying art. Even if trance and hosue are decreasing in popularity as the latest (or a month old) issue of MixMag pointed out with their 'World Cup' article which ended with the rather harsh statement of, "Trance:2; Drum N Bass:4 --- Drum N Bass Wins!", dance music is still kickin' and, in my opinion, becoming more and more popular. When an American rock or hip hop group comes out with a CD, it becomes incredibly popular and sells huge numbers of CDs, but I doubt anything non-EDM can compare to some of the popularity acheived by the 'cheesier' tracks. I mean, when 'Dragostea Din Tea' and 'Call on Me' dropped... the world stopped turning.

And wasn't that Tiesto who even played at the opening ceremony at the Olypmics in '04!

I think it was in Athens!

seriously... I've driven around most of the country. I've lived up and down the eastern seaboard, and I would have to say that NYC has, by far, the worst radio stations and selection that I've ever found. Hell, in rural maine you can find a better selection. But, this is JMHO

Hmm i def agree that on a global perspective dance is pretty big and prob bigger than hip hop and rock etc. But locally there just isnt much demand for it. I would even bet that worldwide EDM is getting less popular.. just seems that way to me. Back in 2000 there were techno clubs everywhere and were always packed. Now unless theyre ranked Top 5 theres not much of a crowd. Little by little thursdays started going hip hop and clubs started having hip hop rooms. In London Gatecrasher went from weekly to monthly due to a decrease in demand. I dont know... just my 2 cents anyways... :)

State side, most forms of electronic music are associated with the drug culture. It's how society as a whole looks at the nightlife, that of course is portrayed by the media covering stories about nightclubs shut downs due to drugs, people overdosing, they only cover the edm culture from a negative point of view. This is one reason why we'll never see a mainstream EDM station on Clear Channel. You might have a program on a Clear Channel Station, but you won't have a devoted station to all genres in EDM.

What is really surprising me is how they are subliminally including the edm "beat culture" with mass media advertising. Interesting studies in "shopping music" shows that EDM does entice buyers to buy more, especially in boutiques outfitted with nightlife wear. Domestically, it's a mood changer, not seen as an artform or musical expression. I've seen edm references in main stream tv ads, sport introductions, and even in highly televised tv series. Again, it's a mood stimulator, not a mass appealing music genre.

Popular music/culture is all about where the big rich people want to put their money.

that's all it really comes down too. When a style starts to die they will promote something else, and society follows(For the most part no matter what it is).

As far as actual AM/FM radio stations are concerned I just read an article (Wired Magazine) that had a graph showing Talk Radio's steady rise and Music Radio's decline. Now apparently more people listen to Talk Radio than music because mp3's, along with Internet and Satellite Radio are making AM/FM obsolete. I'd personally prefer it if Internet Radio stations could be picked up on mobile devices so that we could listen to say, Hai Lee or Big Mike's broadcast or Digitally Imported while on the go.

My guess is that in the upcoming years Internet and Satellite radio will combine. If EDM ever becomes really popular in the States it will have probably already missed the AM/FM era. People will listen, and certain stations may become popular, but by then it probably won't be a New York City station. It will just be a world station, or at least a US station that people would be tuning in to EDM for.

Yeah there are, but I'm looking forward to players that pick up all internet broadcasts as well, not just select satellite stations.

As a former NYC resident I'd like to share this cool fact with all of you. Before WKTU was 103.5 they were WKTU 92 Disco. They have been doing dance music since the late 70's/early 80's. Here was one of their promos:

Enjoy!
