Ultimately though, was it worth sticking Walcott/Jenas/Downing in there?

I'd say definately not, Defoe, Bent and POSSIBLY Walcott could have gone, but only if he was prepared to give Walcott a go if needed (which he clearly wasn't)

PS: I think Pele played in his first when he was 16 - could be wrong though :thepirate

I think sven should have taken defoe. I still cant figure out why Jol doesnt play him because i think hes better than Mido and definately better than shooter boy keane.

Bent over Walcott for sure. Bent can be a poacher around goal which english strikers lack besides maybe owen and with owens fitness dodgy b4 the start of the tournament, he would have been a perfect back up because Rooney sure as hell doesnt stand around the 6 yard box waiting for service.

In any case, whats happened has happened and hopefully Mclaren is wise enough to draw from the faults because this england team is loaded with talent that its hard to up their potential unless ur name is Sven Goran Erriksson. Besides maybe Gary Neville and on a lower level Paul Robinson, this fully fit england starting XI is unbeleivable on paper.

With regards to Pele, now ur just touching a different level of talent altogether lol.

Rooney: in right bitch and i only stepped on carvalhos nuts so i could make him like you. Hes been the only one in the portuguese team whose had balls this whole tournament.

My dad wanted to stay but you know how the 80s were in Liverpool for jobs and it wasn't long before he lost his so back to Canada it was when I was nearly 5. He always wanted to go back permanently but we did alright over here. I've been back a few times and spent a lot of time in the north around St. Helens and Chester.

We're a Blues family though. I was at Wembley for the 1995 FA Cup Final/ I'm still amazed my grandpa scored us tickets for that one, but he has his ways.

vandict: admit it, we would have lost it with or without ronaldo's help. infact we'd have probably lost even harder with 11 men considering we only woke the up after rooney went off

the foul didn't look intentional to me but even if it wasn't, the card was justified; it's dangerous & careless play & his reaction made it all the worse. and we don't always get the short end of the stick.. remember ronaldinho's sending off against us last WC? it was for all.. a yellow offence at worst (and we still lost)

and for crying out loud.. attacking people's own country's teams as a comeback against england criticism is pathetically desperate, especially the likes of ireland/scotland etc.. stop giving the rest of us fans a bad name!

(extra note #1: despite this i still think the euro 2004 QF was a farce)

(extra note #2: despite this i still think ronaldo is a cock)

why am i giving England fans a bad name???, makes me laugh, England loose and the whole world have ago (especially Irish/Scottish/Welsh) what the has it got to do with them, if any of these teams lost i wouldn't go on a forum and start ripping it out of them, i've got better things to do with my time, especially as they didn't even make it to the World Cup!!!!

well, i'm not really a foreigner though eh. Born in Liverpool, English dad, Canadian mom with English parents. I was swearing a lot after the game but there's hardly much point. The England bashers will always justify that goes against England and in the end, we're just crap at penalties, for which there is no excuse. Think of how many tournaments England could have won if they even had a 50% winning ratio in penalties. The 1990 World Cup and 1996 Euro for sure I'd say.

Look, there's no doubt whatsoever that England has terrible luck with penalty shootouts. If I was english I'd probably go frustrated as hell too. What you don't seem to get is that as much as we justify your losses, you likewise always find a victim outside of the England squad to drop all your frustrations in.

I don't have the slightest doubt that who made you lose the game was Wayne Rooney, yet apparently you all name Ronaldo who did nothing more but try to defend his interests - guess what, he's actually playing for the opponent's team! Isoterra said you played better with 10 men and it's true England didn't drop a lot right after that sending off. But in extra time, although you had some chances, most of the game was 9 men behind the ball and Portugal trying to break down your defence.

At the end what I mean is that if you are crap in penalty shootouts, you have to try your best to win the game in 120 minutes instead of forcing for a draw. With 10 men that is incredibly dificult, the tendency is always to try to hold your opponent instead of going forward and trying to win the game.

And here is where we justify the expulsion by saying Rooney stepped on another players balls, and you have to find an excuse to make yourselves believe it was an unfair call.

England has been in the last 8 in three successive tournaments so I'd say they are easily above the top quarter. Scotland and Ireland are nowhere near it and Israel, well... They always have the "potential" to win a major tournament, whereas the other British Isles nations will never come anywhere close. Taking flak from a certain Irishman on here (Michael19), who continually assaults England at every opportunity when his own nation didn't even qualify...just not justified.:)

cry me a river...

So i take you havent posted any negative comments on any other team in this forum? Or is it acceptable for you to post comments because your team qualified for the WC, that suddenly gives you some authority on footballing matter. Wow, i bow down before you.

I posted the truth about england, but unfortunatly the truth hurts for most english people so they cover it over with a big pile of bull.

Compare englands starting 11/ performances during the world cup and see how many players would make it into the italian, german, french, and portugese 11.

I can only think of one or two who would have a chance.

I am sure that just my anti-english blinkeredness though. I am sure all 11 English players would easily make it into those teams...

Instead of blaming Rooney you should blame the FA/Sven. Everytime you lose a tournament you blame some outside influence. If you actually aimed you angry at the people who deserve you would be alot better off.

Maybe then you wouldnt of had that clown Sven in charge for 5 years. And whats worse is you ave hired Steve Mclarean as his replacement. :stongue:

You had the chance to get a decent manager yet your media ruined it. Like they do with nearly everything. 4 months before the world cup they humiliate Sven and his players and try get him sacked. Thats a great way to go into a world cup isnt it?

Instead of continually blaming refs, the oppisition players for cheating, the dodgy turf under the peno spot etc etc. Have long hard look at your team/ the management. Then you might actually have the chance to win a major tournament.

I still think Ronaldo played a part in getting him sent off because you could clearly see that the referee gave no indication of taking out a card but only did so when Rooney lost his temper like a child. Now that I"ve thought about it, England weren't good enough anyway and would have been missing too many key guys against France. But it's just very frustrating that every time England crash out of a tournament like this, something controversial happens. I really don't know if England will ever get over this negative mindset and I agree with Michael about the English press. They do everything they can to sabotage the team to sell some papers.

Anyway, it's all over now. Good luck tomorrow against France. I have great respect for Scolari, Deco, Ricardo and Valente (of course since he is an Everton man) among others on Portugal. It goes without saying that they are all gifted players. But I still dislike Figo and Ronaldo very much for their antics and I just hope tomorrow's game is an honest and fair one.
