Agreed. Something interesting has to happen in the first few seconds (that was my main criticism of my own last trance demo - the intro was far too long!), preferably involving a groovy bassline :D

It all depends on the set.
Some sets and crowds you just start right away.

I disagree. I think it's ok ocassionally, but all the best sets I have seen use intro tunes which take aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages to get going.

I swear I've had a whole compartment in my brain dedicated to this topic for years:

Beanfield - Tides (Carl Craig Remix)
Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom - Relevee (Carl Craig Remix)
Freefall – Skydive (good for anything really, depending on where you mix in)
Laurent Garnier – Acid Eiffel
Laurent Garnier – The Man With The Red Face
Ada – Maps (Michael Mayer & Tobias Thomas Remix)
Humate – 3.2 (Bedrock Remix)
Redshape – 2084
Sucker DJs – Lotta Lovin’ (Paradise Soul Remix)
iiO – At The End (MadeEdit)
Fatboy Slim – Bird of Prey
Infected Mushroom – Neverever Land
Melt - Be Liquid
theognis1002
Digital Pressure - Aftershokk

I think that only really works if you're the headliner and you've got quite a long set... at the other end of the scale I've seen the 2nd DJ on a lineup using 10 a minute intro for an hour-long set - silly bugger!

Yeah, for sure.

Headliners with 3 or 4 hour sets only, it's stupid for warm-up DJs to do it.

I forgot to include: Steve Angello - Acid. Awesome opening track. His production used to be so good, what the hell happened?
DOOMBOT
Opening your set with Beroshima - Horizon (Pig & Dan Remix) will get you an automatic lay that night.
Sukhoi29SU
Jose Amnesia - The Eternal (Pulser remix) or (Sunrise mix)
Solar Stone - Seven Cities (Armin Van Buuren Vocal mix)
Psychotron
Cape Town - Proglifter Original Mix

Clovis
I find my own :o
Leswitch
The intro version of Sultan & Tommyboy - You make me feel extacy is a really dark and effective start, if you want that..

Orbital - Halcyon + on + on, we all know works like a charm. :D

Santos - Camels. Quite odd, but nevertheless.. It will get people moving. :tongue2

For a trancier start, Nalin & Kane - Open your eyes.
