Doran retired last night :(

When I saw him at Spundae last night he informed me that was his last gig. Apparently he is having some inner ear problems that is causing him a lot of pain when DJing and is therefore retiring from DJing. Doran is a great guy, a better DJ, and a even better friend. I personlly wish him luck with his flash design business and hope that the music never leaves his life.

I just with I wasn't playing the same time he was so I could hear him for the last time.

that is very unfortunate. i never got the chance to hear him live but i have heard a lot of great things about him. i too wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Yo Thee-O, got a related question to you.

Youve been in the game for a very long time now. Have you noticed any hearing damage at all from all the exposure to the loud systems? What precautions do you take?

I have noticed some funky things going on every once in a while from all the exposure I have had from going clubbing. And now that I have started playing out more and doing the radio show...my ears get wrecked quite often.

I am curious to see what your perspective is on this issue. I am sure many would benefit from the advice. Thanks and keep up the good work homie.

It is weird. My wife and I met at a rave almost 10 years ago. She being a clubber has worst hearing then me being a DJ. I walk into our living room all the time turning down the TV because she just has it on way to loud. As a DJ, I usually only sustain myself to loud music mainly during my set. After and before I am usually outside, chatting or in the back of the room. I try not to put myself into situations where I am listening to loud music for hours on end. Even when I am producing I try to keep things a very moderate level. I think as a clubber and DJ everyone should were earplugs or give their ears a rest every hour for at least 10 to 15 mins. Luckily for me and I hope this continues, my hearing is pretty good. I can make out details a lot of others miss. My wife complains about me having bad hearing but to me...that is just selective hearing ;)

now that sounds like an issue between you two, not your eardrums. :haha: :stongue:

what a bummer though, doran has been in it for such a long time. i had no idea that was his last gig.

i'm sorry to hear about Doran as well. It's unfortunate to hear about his hearing damage, especially when it is something that could have been prevented in most cases.

I've been meaning to make a thread about this because i've very recently seen the benefits of some fitted professional musicians ear plugs I bought a month ago. Previous to purchasing these I started noticing that after big shows I just felt like my head got boxed in. Fortunately for me i dont have any ringing or permanent damage; however, I do have a very slight hearing loss. Thankfully it's less than I should have.

I purchased a pair of sensaphonics professional musicians ear plugs about a month ago and I have to tell you that these are the best investment i've ever made to date. I am fully capable of mixing and producing just the same was I was prior to using these. The only difference is my ears feel like a million bucks the next day. I have noticed a particular improvement after playing venues like Spundae or 4th and B where the sound is really really loud.

THe other obvious benefits to these is that you can wear them while clubbing and not have to worry about the crazy loud sound system blowing out your ears. These work much different than usual ear plugs, so you can still hear conversations, etc... with no real difference. They are also pretty much invisble unless you take a hard look.

The only downer about the plugs is that they are $$$. The set cost me $275, which included the fitting, the consult and the filter. The filters come in 25dB, 15dB and 8db decibel reduction amounts. I started with the 25, and even with that substantial of a loss, I can still do everything just as well.

If anyone is interested, I highly recommend these. The company information is as follows:

Sensaphonics
877-848-1714
www.sensaphonics.com

I got fitted at the san diego hearing clinic for these, so I'm sure they have similar clinics in the LA area that could do this as well.

hope this helps :)

i was onstage at Avalon last nite for Darren Emerson's set...i was stunned how loud he would turn up the monitors - it was louder than being on the dancefloor...i was told he too has a bit of a hearing problem hence the reason he turned it up so much...

Doran is a great guy.

He has been contemplating this for a long long time, and I hope he is happy with his decision and wish him lots of luck.

I have been using the shure in ear headphones and no monitors for about 6 months. These kill any ambient noise from the club so it makes no difference how loud it gets in there, I hear a very dull roar.

This allows me to keep the sound in the ear peices low as well, so when
Im done, I take them out and its like I have been listening to my ipod.
No ill affects, no tinitis....nothing.

Hopefully we all take the damage we do to our ears more seriously.

yep. i've had tinitus for a while now. don't really go clubbing that much cus of it. try not to listen to music at loud levels....IT SUCKS

earplugz ftw

$275 to save your ears and prolong your career is dirt cheap, I gotta get a pair of these too while my hearing is still pretty good.

Nice one Scott!

yep, funny too. :stongue:

yep, I have tinitus. Also a moderate hearing loss, hereditary.
I got fitted with custom 25db plugs about 2 months ago and I should have gotten them a looooong time earlier. I was wearing nothing and figured it wouldn't be that bad since I have hearing loss anyway.

But one day after an armin show I was like fock, it's focking loud in there.

Now if I don't wear them out all over the clubs I think it's extremely loud.
