There is also a big difference in Loud versus distorted.. A lot of the main reason for hearing damage is distortion. This is caused in many ways:

System not being tuned correctly
System not be Eq'ed for the specific room
Dj's pushing the mixer in to RED levels, HELLO PEOPLE Red means stop, get out of the red!!!
Playing MP3 tracks that are less then 320K can really hurt your ears on a big system, when you have over 10,000 watts going in to the room that part of the sound that the MP3 compressed is killing your ears.

if you take some live instruments or a producing program and everything is tuned properly you can get a lot louder and not damage your ears in the same way.

just some food for thought.

I see you're point but there is no excuse for not wearing protection.

All the benefits and none of the drawbacks.

It's not like anybody WANTS to go deaf. Me, i'm happy with what hearing I can get.

Which brings up the question: Why does it HAVE to be SO loud in some clubs (e.g., Space Miami, Ruby Skye, 4th & B...)???
RobertStern
I thought Ruby Skye was all right, it can get border line though... but definately Space and 4th and B are smoking crack, I am mr loud and that sh&t is way too loud, and 4th and B sounds like crap most of the time, really painful for the ears.
SVGmethod
as soon as i finish spinning in the club, i have a bad headache for an hour or two and i feel disoriented. i feel like i had been in a boxing match or something.

Yeah, I mentioned Ruby Skye because of May 27--unbearable distortion and loudness :whip:

Empire Ballroom FTW sound ;)

A sound system can being crazily loud if it's tuned well and not have much long term effects on your ears. Remember reading an article on this like three years ago.

This is supposing clean (non-distorted) sound is being fed into the system to begin with.

Ruby Skye's sound is usually just fine. Except for the upstairs speakers in the corner. For some reason, they often have those so lound it's just too distorted.

regardless of tuning, the point is

GET EAR PLUGS and protect your . At some point all that exposure will catch up to you. Think about when your in your 50's :(

Sorry to hear a great dj retire. Saw doran about 3 years ago at an free event at pearl. What a great set he layed down that night. Still remember couple of tracks he played that night. closed the night with solar stone - seven cities.
