Then they should be a C O M P O S E R not a P R O D U C E R !
If you can't learn how to use your equipment or design sounds, you should be composing music, not producing it. Producing requires, whether you like it or not, some level of knowledge about sound, DSP, and synthesis. If you don't know how to use the synth, LEARN! It will only enable you to produce music that is "yours," not some preset . And if you can't learn how to use a basic subtractive synthesizer, then turn up the distortion on your guitar and rock out some Green Day. That's like a preset too! |

| Dj sentinel is so right, though it might be really hard for ppl new to producing to start building good patches from scratch. |

| Yes i always use Heavily modified presets, its the only way for me, i suck at synthesis, and by modifying someone elses presets, it shows me the way of synthesis |

but by using presets your just going to sound like every other amatuer producer. if everyone used preset sounds all our tunes would sound the same. eventually you will have to create your own bass presets and the best time to start is right away as it takes quite a while to get good bass's. it took me ages to get my bass's good and their still not great. |
im a fan of originality, dont get me wrong, but why is it that a lot of the up and coming artists sound exactly the same? (pop music/ happy hardcore) |

Well...you gotta sound somewhat the same as other artists if your aim is to produce within a certain genre. Otherwise, you'd be following the basic formula for a genre but nobody would recognize it that well. In the same respect, it may not even attact a strong base of listeners if it's too experimental (i.e., too original).
These days it's very difficult to come up with original synths that nobody has heard before. It goes the same for melodies, basslines, etc....
So just produce what you like, follow your passions, and do WHATEVER you have to do to achieve a certain sound. |

yes, I always follow my passions...without it, i think that was very difficol for me to proucing somethings ;)
my problem is only the bassline's sounds...
I hope that you listen my song in the future...:) |

there is nothing wrong with using presets - there are hundreds of synths with thousands of presets - so the combinations are immense.
if a preset is exactly the sound you want, are you not going to use it?
ffs - trance from 1999-2004 wouldn't have existed without a certain supersaw waveform on a jp8000 (pretty much a preset imho)
basslines aren't about presets - they are about eq. a standard saw wave sound works fine as a bassline if it's equed right |

Bah if you keep using presets you will never learn subtractive synthesis. Not as well as you could by making all your sounds yourself.
If you have trouble making basslines, get practising with your sound design. I dont mind sharing patches with people who are stuck on specifics. Dont mind sharing patches with people who give something back to the community.
No offence, DJ Ruck, but I dont know you so how about you spend a little more time around here and get to know how things swing before you start asking for freebies? |

I always begin with a preset that has a sound thats close to what i want to have, then i just tweak it until i have the sound i want.
I didnt know anything about programing synths when i started producing music, and i still donīt, but im learning after every sound i tweak.
Ive had some plans on going to a music production course, but i dont have the time and money for it. I produce as an hobby and i like playing around with sounds. I take much inspiration from other producers and sertain sounds and i try to recreate them, and when ive done that i tweak it to another.
I dont see anything wrong in using presets. As long as the finl product is a relly good track, i dont think the listener care about, or knows if its from a preset or not, just us producer nerds ;)
Regarding a bassline, you should get Audiorealism Bassline VST, and play around with it, its a simple 303 emulatior. Its easy to learn the basics in it and you can create a massive bassline with it when u learn how to use it. In my opinion, a bassline doesnt need to be complicated, but once you get a hang of it, try layering sounds like bass and lead. By layering to tweaked presets you can get a different sound without knowing synth programing.

I agree that sound design is an important part of trance. However, the synth is not the only way to design a sound. I use alot of presets and edit them if necessary but FX & composition is where the sound comes alive for me.
I hate it when people get self-righteous. Let people do what they want. Why do you care so much if someone wants to use presets?
And it's not the same as loops... A ludicrous comparison.
Peace
