Save Us, America!!! (pg. 2)

Moral Hazard
Canada is evacuating nearly 40,000 Canadians from Lebanon. Many here are upset that the government (so the tax payers) are footing the bill for it. Personally, I don't see that the Canadian government has a choice. Our constitution guarentees all citizens the right to security of the person. This creates a duty on the government to take all reasonable steps to protect it's citizens (note the constitution does not specify this guarentee is only applicable within Canadian boarders).

I don't know if there is such a guarentee in the US constitution, however, I would suspect there is something similar.

The opposite reaction happened here. When people found out that the US government was making evacuees sign promissory notes to repay the evacuation expenses, there was outrage that we weren't doing this for free, so now we will be.

For the Canadians, are you guys allowed to evacuate your people through Syria?

No, people were outraged here as well, just not those of us that understand the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Canadians are allowed to evacuate to/via Syria, however, given the extremely high number of Canadians in Lebenon (appox 40K) the Canadian government has chartered 6 ocean liners to take Canadians out to Cypris and from there they have chartered jets to fly them to Canada.

the US could reign it's lap dog if it wanted to, but it prefers not to now and as a consequence, americans are in danger. are people responsible for putting themselves in hostile terroitory? of course, but at the same time we can't disregard US government's inaction.

The Philiphines government (30k Philipinos in Lebanon according to Israeli news) rebuffed its residents there by saying "Sorry, we don't have the money to evacuate you".

Not sure, I'll see if I can find out through some of the Canadian blogs I frequent.
I would guess though that if Americans wheren't, Canadians wheren't.

People are ultimately responsible for their own decisions. The government's job is not to babysit you and make decisions for you.

Who owns you? Hopefully you own you. You are responsible for yourself and all of the dumbass decisions you choose to make (likewise, you don't ask the government to take all of the credit when you actually make a bright decision).

This was the same argument I was mentioning in the 'other' thread when someone asked about how I felt about the 7 Canadians that were killed.

If you're going to 'vacation' in a hotspot, don't be surprised when stuff goes down!
