I'd consider getting my stuff mastered by an engineer, but at the moment I do the whole lot mysef.

except vinyl mastering - thats a completely different thing.

well, even if you're really good at mastering, you should consider to let your OWN tunes master by another person. if you heard your tunes too much you're hearing things which aren't really the way you think they are.
so the best way to master a tune is with fresh ears which don't know the tune yet..

I agree on that, BUT that often costs, if you dont have good connections or someone you know how to do this, which in my case is true.

Yes i know music isnt free, but i personally just do this for fun, and if i make a good track and someone grabs it for signing, thats just a plus.

It's so odd to me that music artists in the EDM world are called "producers". I come from the rock and metal scene, and in that world if you play music you are called a musician. You aren't at all expected to produce and engineer your own tracks, you get someone else to do that. So to me, it's not at all unusual for a composer/arranger, A.K.A a song writer, to have help when it comes to production, mixing, sound engineering, ect. I see nothing wrong with a musician concentrating on just the music.

It's the role of a producer to run the recording session(s). So, the producer (in mainstream recording) tells the engineer what he wants and the engineer makes it happen. In EDM, it's the producer is really a hybrid of the artist, producer, and the engineer. But, there are many producers in all genres who really have minimal knowledge of engineering, other than they want certain inputs on certain channels and effects patched across certain channels and so on... So, in honesty, the role of the producer is kinda redefined with each producer... depending on if it's Quincy Jones or Tiesto...

it's always good to have a pair of objective ears with you while producing.

i know dave 202's new songs werent made by him but by sean tyas...i think it would be better to make a thread for a list of producers who engineer there own songs...oh and misjah helsoots new songs arent his either and i know marcel woods uses walt to co produce....the list goes on.

The answer is: EVERYONE!!!

Every one who's in the mainstream is helped by an engineer at some point in the process, mostly at mastering stage. For an example, let's say that i want to put in my track a saxophone, i ask a friend of mine who is an engineer for help, i explain him what i want, what kind of sound, even i play some tracks with a similar sound. everyone can put a microphone in front of a guy playing a sax, but i'm sure the engineer has the knowledge to get the result i'm trying to achieve. I assume most people do the same.

I know some of you guys have audio-engineer-knowledge, but let me tell you something: If you are helped by an engineer, you can really focus into the artistic/musical side of the track, plus avoid mistakes that can give you a headache later in the process.

If you can't even record a sax to sound how you want don't even start trying to create your own trance sounds. They are on a whole nother level to process. Have fun with presets my friend and enjoy having engineers do your work for you.

It was a good idea to change this thread to producers who are engineers...

So, who knows what EDM produrcers engineer their own stuff, as in dynamic/time based processing, mixdown --->balancing levels, overdubbing, programming and sample recording... You know, stuff other than picking a synth voice or telling a vocalist what lyrics to sing...the hands on dirty work that makes the track...

the usuals... BT, PVD, JXL... I've never really sought out who does their own engineering so I'd be interested to know what djs/producers work both sides of the house...
