sorry for the title couldn't come with a better idea

but im sorry to see years after years the Tv programms are not what they used to be okay i don't want to sound like a granny and won't say the shows were the best 20 yrs ago but i think the comming of these programs of reality tv are ruining the TV

tonite i went to a friend and we watched a part (it's still on actually) of a tv reality program called i translate the "temptation island" simple concept 4 couples are in some paradise island for 12 days separated from each other with 22 single guys and ladies and they have to test "the strengh of their love" and the faithfulness but what amazed me is how these kind of program manage to show u what they want u to show.....i know most of the programs on Tv do that but i think that's lame like they were showing some part of images totally out of context and situation so finally some random talk between a guy and a girl was becoming suddenly some flirting

the point is it annoys me to see that for the love of money and audience Tv which can provides some interesting stuffs and all finally end up using the harshest business methods neglecting what makes the tv great : which is a good entertainement and informating tool to be some making money machines

okay okay i don't want to sound like a revolutionnary or something but what do u guys think and do u enjoy these kind of programs?i totally despise them and to have seen some part of it made me feel this way even more

:p

I don't like 'reality' based tv at all; there's nothing 'real' about it.

The fact that it spun off clones like bad copies of copies to flood the tube guide really gives truth to the complaint that there really is, "Hundreds of channels with nothing to watch"...

One of the many reasons I haven't had cable in over....god...7yrs now??

HA! I remember Temptation Island. That was probably one of the trashiest shows I've ever watched, but it was so entertaining (was a great summer time waster). People were hooked on the show for that very reason--it was just soooo trashy! Funny how U.S. TV shows show up around the world years after their debut. Here, I'll save you some trouble:

WARNING SPOILER:

Keith and Tara are by far the "coolest" people on the island. They know the game and they play the other s perfectly (along with Dave & Charla). Unfortunately they don't win. Charla/Dave, Keith/Tara form an alliance and clean house. In the end, Charla wins and has the opportunity to split the winnings with Dave, but being the selfish bitch that she is, she decids to keep all of the winnings for herself.

This site actually used to work (I guess until it was hacked): http://www.daveboston.com/

I can't believe I remember all of that garbage, but people who watched the show were truly addicted to it. They tried to do a follow up called "Forever Eden," but it was a miserable failure and was cancelled after like 3 episodes. Gotta love pop culture!

There has always been trash on TV in one form or another.

It's up to the end user aka YOU to decide what you want to watch. ;)

It's always easier to complain but to actually turn the TV of that sure does take an effort :haha:.
I watch maybe 2 or 3 hours of tv a week ( regular tv that is ( Arte :D ) ... apart from news for maybe half an hour a day ).

I watched the first season of The Loft ( french tv show ) quite religiously as did everyone at the time in France because it was the first show of it's kind there.
Haven't watched another crap reality show since.

Sure the concept could be fun but way too many beatings of the dead horse many times over. :stongue:

God damn it, you are right! How could I be so foolish?!?! I know I saw Temptation Island but I think Paradis Hotel might've been my favorite. What trash!

I see nothing wrong with reality TV. Summarising, the whole thing consists of having:

  1. Real people in;
  2. Real situations and;
  3. Therefore, no script.

The concept of having (a) "real" people (rather than what we would perceive as characters) is nothing knew. Most characters (i.e. ideal people as in people created by ideas) do have the intention of being "real": In fact, if we consider how Aristotle's concept of catharsis works, you need to have some sort of identity bond with the characters (e.g. placing yourself on their shoes, at least emotionally). Having "real" people is an excellent way of not linking an actor to other characters, being more convincing (e.g. who has never seen Nicholas Cage in City of Angels wondering why the hell he is not stealing cars and the like? :D). I know I often do that.

Now, (c) having no script is nothing but another interpretation of improvisation. In this case, all you have is an idea, rather than a fixed plot. Even if it is staged, as you clearly know some reality tv programmes are indeed staged, it tries to tell the story as if it were improvised.

Finally, we have (b) real situations. Once again, here we see a new face of the good ol' Realism. It wants to be real, and what best way to portray reality than using/faking reality itself? Personally, I don't think it can get more real than that :p

So, in the end, it does seem to play social role similar to that of other kinds of art. It's not rare (at least here) to see people talking about Big Brother Brazil (or whatever) as if they were talking about a fact that happened with their friends. "Oh, did you see what that guy did to that girl?", "Yeah, what a bastard!". This is a great mechanism of social cohesion - suddenly everyone has a subject in common to talk about, just like any other kind of mass art (books, soap operas, ...). It's entertainment, after all.

I personally love the fact that, back when I taught English, I didn't even need to watch TV in order to know what happened: more often than not, my students would report me everything they had seen. I don't really know what's going on now, as the World Cup was the last event I saw on television.

Edit: Marie, did you ever receive my pm? :conf:

haha.. temptation island.. yea it was in the states a few years ago. I have to confess I did see a few episodes of it. But basically, trash is on TV because people like to watch it. The whole 'reality' show surge has really caught on and they are riding it for all the advertising money they can get. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just we'll be stuck with it until people stop liking it. :D

and I'm curious, you said it's being aired wherever you are translated? What language (if it's dubbed)? (I assume french or swedish based on your avatar/location flag) That's kinda funny. It's done in the US now so they're playing it in Europe.

I actualy though about signing up for a reality show a few months ago. Its called Race and basicly its 4 guys and 4 girls racing each other in a race spec Toyota Yaris (poor car i know but toyota is a sponsor and since they stopped making the supra they dont have a sports car in their lineup anymore) being tutured by a bunch of rally drivers. I dont know how it looks like becouse i dont know if it even aired yet and even if it did i dont watch TV.
The reason i havent bothered sighning up is that with my warped personality i would have been voted off the show after the first episode anyway, so why bother.

Well oviously theres that of course :D But you never know. From what ive been told (i dont know since i dont watch tv) in these kind of programms there is always one person thats a real ing , someone which you just cant help to want to punch in the face. And i think with my cynical personality, sarcastic outbursts and total disregard for other peoples feelings and beliefes i would fit that slot rather well :D
