It really is breathtaking just how ing stupid and ignorant this guy continues to demonstrate to everyone:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060728...wN5bnN1YmNhdA--
Let's talk about this, shall we?
| quote: | | WASHINGTON - U.S. citizens suspected of terror ties might be detained indefinitely and barred from access to civilian courts under legislation proposed by the Bush administration, say legal experts reviewing an early version of the bill. |
Umm, so anyone who has a "suspicious" look about them can be detained infinitely and cannot have access to civilian courts if Bush gets his way. Any U.S. CITIZEN that is deemed "suspicious" of terrorist activities is no longer given those rights guaranteed to all U.S. citizens under our Constitution according to Bush.
Incredible.
| quote: | | A 32-page draft measure is intended to authorize the Pentagon's tribunal system, established shortly after the 2001 terrorist attacks to detain and prosecute detainees captured in the war on terror. The tribunal system was thrown out last month by the Supreme Court. |
So that tribunal system that SCOTUS deemed unconstitutional is now going back into Executive legislation.
I'm beginning to wonder if Bush is hearing voices in his head.
| quote: | Legal experts said Friday that such language is dangerously broad and could authorize the military to detain indefinitely U.S. citizens who had only tenuous ties to terror networks like al Qaeda.
"That's the big question ... the definition of who can be detained," said Martin Lederman, a law professor at Georgetown University who posted a copy of the bill to a Web blog. |
Now let's not get tripped up here on semantics, shall we professor? The definition is whoever Bush damn well feels like who's being detained because he says so. He's been so good with the law and NEVER steps over the line whatsoever. He has shown his trustworthiness with both his foreign policies in Iraq (we did find WMD, right?) as well as his own interpretation of Constitutional law here domestically (Hamdan was just a little speedbump), no one should question his authoritaay.
This is our King, and we must give him as much power as he deems appropriate so we can all be so well protected. There's so much less terra now in the world, can't you just see how well he's protecting us children so well?
| quote: | Scott L. Silliman, a retired Air Force Judge Advocate, said the broad definition of enemy combatants is alarming because a U.S. citizen loosely suspected of terror ties would lose access to a civilian court -- and all the rights that come with it. Administration officials have said they want to establish a secret court to try enemy combatants that factor in realities of the battlefield and would protect classified information.
The administration's proposal, as considered at one point during discussions, would toss out several legal rights common in civilian and military courts, including barring hearsay evidence, guaranteeing "speedy trials" and granting a defendant access to evidence. The proposal also would allow defendants to be barred from their own trial and likely allow the submission of coerced testimony. |
And why the would we want little rights like those mentioned to get in our way anyway? If they're suspected of being terrorists by Bush....well Christ Almighty THEY ARE TERRORISTS BECAUSE HE SAYS SO! Who ing cares if they're U.S. citizens? Constitutional rights and liberties is all arbitrary anyway.
It's just so tiring to see all you fear-mongering libruls full of hatred deny our President the necessities he demands to protect all us little children. Stop hating our country so much. Stop hating our King. You ing libruls are just as good as the terrorists if you don't support this President - why can't you understand that? |

It's blatantly obvious that I'm not American.
I'm also aware of the fact that I don't know the American political system that well.
However, from what I've read, I wonder: is the population really that passive to what seems to be a quasi-dictatorship? Someone please enlighten me. |

Most people seem to argue that "if you're innocent then you have nothing to worry about." :| |

You know you chastise them for introducing this legislation, but we've never seen this administration get into something they're not intending to see the whole way though. Apart from the whole gay marrage thing but that had alterior motives and wasn't actually intended to pass.
You get upset because you think this legislation is ludicrous. I get upset because I think its ludicrous and actually has a chance of passing. After everything that's happened its not only this administration that should be held accountable but the entire system that is letting it happen. |

Umm, no - I'm upset because of that possibility as well, considering how this GOP Congress rolls over and plays dead at every chance it can.
But given this is an election year, and given there are a number of Republicans distancing themselves from Bush to save their skins in their own district/state, I don't see this legislation passing this year. However, if the GOP maintains it's majority by similar numbers, you can bet you'll see this legislation next year or in '08 even. |
