On the topic of dog extermination, judgement is really a fruitless battle. People do horrible things every day - with good, bad, or indifferent intentions. People do thing on purpose, ignorantly, passionately, etc... people do a wide variety of things that you could apply morality to, and although I do not necessarily believe in absolving them of responsibility, judging people for their opinions and actions brings up many implications and assumptions that you just cannot competently begin to make regarding their persona. So say whatever you want about the killing of dogs - it really has little to do with the grand scheme of human will, free or otherwise.

I think that the only thing that matters is that you ask yourself what you would do if someone asked you to kill something - anything? What if you were given a stick, a gun - could you kill a dog? a human being? how about a bothersome fly? What if you were provided incentive to do it? Money? Prestige? The satisfaction that a noble deed has been accomplished "for the betterment of the human species"? All I know is that life is life, and most of the stigmas we, as a society, have created around the preservation of life are arbitrary and vain; how can you say that a dog is above a human or even a cockroach? There is no such thing as 'above' - life is life, and any such otherwise is just fleeting appeals to your own selfish vanity.

I am not saying that it is alright to kill dogs. I'm not saying it's alright to kill anything or, for that matter, preserve anything - I am just saying just because an animal wags its tail and seemingly "loves" you doesn't make it some higher form of life.

Now what about the torture?

What if I licked my balls and greeted you "lovingly" at the door each day with tactile embrace, breathing heavily and performing whatever stupid tricks you demanded of me so I could get my milkbone while you patronizingly puppeted your selfish will to control other lifeforms by attributing to me characteristics involving complex emotions exclusive to your own species all the while knowing deep down that I am incapable of reciprocating this "love" in a manner that does not involve the gratuity of physical reward and indulgent consumption?

Then would you love me?

FUKKED RIGHT UP!

If they have to kill the dogs because of a health problem, I can't really object. People saying it's like killing a family member should read the article- dogs in China are not treated like that there. However, the real cruelty is that they're killing them with big ing sticks.
