Videogame testing for a living (pg. 2)

To add to the boredom, sometimes they'd have you replay the same part of a game repeatedly looking for a bug. So imagine doing the same thing over and over and over again in as many different ways as possible trying to find a way to make the game up. That was only fun in Grand Theft Auto when doing so could result in blowing up a small population of people running into walls.

I worked for a little while for a company called Squaresoft here in So Cal. It was the late 90s and I was still in undergrad. The pay was horrid, but it was a fun job. If you stick at it and do a good job of networking I'm sure one could progress to a better position

sounds good and legit too cause you know that no matter how hard you try your g/f is always gonna end up hating something about you or what you do!

oh yeah I forgot to mention the fact I am back in France now!

I left all those years so the law would leave me alone, and now that I'm back they don't know I exist so it's all good.

Geez, you are mixing facts with fiction and seeking real advice. Don't know what to say. I mean are you really 32 years old and all that ??

I know a guy that works for EA (not sure if he currently does since I havent talked to him in awhile). He did video game testing, where he would play the game all day and find bugs. It was sorta boring unless the game was fun and you liked it. He got paid (min wage or so). He would come home and sometimes play this online comp game with me, I would say you play games all day and then come home and play them again, why? He would say cuz the ones at work felt like work and the ones at home were fun. He got me discounted BF2 when it came out.

My brother's roommate did this. You're basically a temp. They make you work long hours that get really boring after the first day unless you ABSOLUTELY LOVE playing video games, the games you test are ty by and large, management has no respect for you and they offer you no benefits because they can fire you at will because there will always be young kids who will want to play video games for a living.

Seriously, it's not worth moving to Frankfurt for.

Here are my experiences...

When I first got out of college, I interviewed over the phone for a videogame testing job for EA in Virginia. They gave me the job and sent me the offer letter, but after looking it over, it just wasn't in my best interests. I would have had to relocate from Maryland, and they also only would pay me $10 bucks an hour.

So I held out and ended up getting a job in IT for a videogame company in Redmond, WA. The only difference here is they paid for the relocation. For the 2 years I worked at this company, I was surrounded by game testers. They didn't make much to start, but the ones at the top and in managing positions all were making bank. I became friends with one of them who had started out as a tester for Sega and eventually worked his way up to becoming QA manager and was now making 100k. All from starting out as a game tester. So I say go for it because if you put enough time into you, you can someday work your way to becoming a QA lead, then a manager and you'll be set.
