i've read of horrible experiences of people responding to "wanna be a game tester" ads in the newspaper.

| i did that once for 3D-realms in FL. It was a Zorro game...what a pile of crap that was. I remember seeing an early demo of tek wars they showed me running on the Duke-Nukem 3D engine..it looked cool back in the early 90's. |

| The thing about being a videogame tester is that you gota really be into it at first. The reason why they have videogame testers in the first place, Is so that the developers can get any feedback if they spotted any bugs, Any exploits that some people might use for cheating in the game or stuff they can improve upon to make the games more emersive. |

| Okay just so we're clear on this, when I guy introduces himself as a video gamer tester, I turn around and walk the other way. Srsly. Not that its happened yet, but I know I could never get past it, no matter how nice you are. It reaks of laziness and absolutely NO ambition. |

^^ what if said "lazy guy" were to then progress to the head of sony (or similar) gaming division?
depends on the type of testing really because testing is not always as simple as somebody sitting around all day playing games.
i've got a mate who's a "tester" in the gaming/casino industry and his role is to develop/program code to test the numerous permutations/combinations of possible outcomes for poker machines. A high degree of mathematics is required to perform the role, and he's not allowed to play the pokies anywhere in the region that he works in (for obvious reasons).
There are also testers who require an ability to write detailed reviews of each game that they test. So some journalism skills are required there.
Based on the description of the job jdat has given, I don't see that as being lazy at all. It's a 40-hr/week job. Personally I'd be bored as bat doing that kind of job, with limited human interaction, but I can see why it'd be interesting for some. |

| Right, but I dont call your friend's job a "tester." Id look at that as more of a programmer. My idea of a tester is what these guys were talking about - someone sitting around without job security playing video games without end. |

hey don't judge me ok? :p
First of all this is not my ultimate goal to work their for good.
I have actually been unable to work since january 2005 for various reasons ( spending my life in the hospital being the biggest issue ). Now that the page is turned I need to get back into the swing of things slowly.
I am only interested in this because it would give me the opportunity to be fully immersed in the german cultural and basically try to learn the language again ( which will help me tons in trying to get a good job in the area where I live )!
I would be getting a lot more out of the job than just a paycheck.
Like I said I'd do it for a couple months tops and then bugger off. |

| And I also believe that the game testers are getting paid some serious money to do it. |

But what if he's buff and cut and hot. |

| sounds like a great job, but if you're not interested in playing video games you probably wouldn't like it. i guess a good beta tester has to try like, every option, go everywhere, do everything, etc. just to make sure there aren't any bugs. sounds kinda tedious to me. |

I did it when i worked for ATI a few years ago.
i dont remember it ever feeling like work, except i had to somtimes play ty games i didn't want to (like a nurf fps). i only made $10 hour but it was still pretty enjoyable. |
