Being formal <Lira's emo rant>

How much do you think you conform/oppose to social norms in general?

Slowly, I've noticed I've got a problem with social formalities and being formal (or what seems to be perceived as "adult") in general. That probably has to do with the fact that I often link "being formal" with "not being close" to people - you're not formal with your friends, after all; and the fact that I really don't feel like changing just because that's what others want from me.

This friend of my mother's, for example, started picking on me because "I didn't dress my age" - for some reason, she wanted me to be a metrossexual, even though I'm quite happy with my plaid shirts and cargo pants. My parents also started annoying me because of my piercings (my mother had actually told me that she would keep annoying me unless I had them removed or moved abroad), even though my bosses didn't mind the metal in my face at all.

If I'm not inclined to change, I guess I should work a solution out to avoid this annoyance I feel when I'm "rejected" by social standards.

Heh. Fight the man... or something :p

i guess i conform to a certain extent, but it's that damn advertisings fault..because i see stuff and then want it for myself haha :p. i dunno...

I used to get that a lot as a little girl. My mother would tell me I wasn't very "lady like", and it always made me want to be "unlady like" more often.

Even now, I get flak about my hair being so short, and sometimes I get told by my "superiors" that I am too out-spoken.

It angers me that other people try and force their idea of what I should be on me, and it usually results in me telling them where to shove it. The only person who should be in control of who you are, is you, and it should be because that is what makes you happy.

If people don't like it... too bad. If you give in to what they want, then you are practically throwing away your privelage to be who you are.

I've got news for you, the clothes you wear and your piercings don't diverge from social standards. You're confusing the small sphere of your life with the standards of society. The truth is, millions of people have piercings and dress the way you do; it's accepted. And hanging out with your mom's friend isn't a formal situation. You'd be breaking social standards if you went to a Governor's Ball in all that crap, probably. As far as daily life goes, old people don't set social standards. Ignorant people don't set social standards. The few people you know who don't like the way you look don't set social standards. Cool people set social standards. Like celebrities and musicians. Likely you would be wearing something completely different if some famous rock musicians in the early-90's had made a different choice of wardrobe, regardless of who you're around.

Now, musicians are the other opposite of the spectrum sometimes :p

I just don't like to create animosity, that's all. But it often seems people want it for themselves. I reckon I need to be more oblivious and just ignore their existence, suits more my way of life :p

My girlfriend once mentioned she wanted to see what would happen if I turned metro.

As long as people are doing what they actually want to do because it makes them happy, it's all right with me. It's when people want to do/wear/listen to something just because other people are doing it and it makes them feel included, thats what pisses me off. It also pisses me off when people knock down other people's choices just because they don't agree with them...everyone's entitled to their opinion but if you're going to go around telling other people you don't like their piercings and then off, there are a lot better things to have opinions about. You just got to give these people a big middle finger and tell them that it makes you happy and you don't care if they don't like it.

I agree with tranceDJ, minus the hostility. If someone doesn't agree with something I'm doing, I could care less. I'll listen to their opinion, try and see where they are coming from, but it I can't see the point, whatever. End of story.
