Evertime I watch England play their level of performance seems to keep dropping. Watching the game against Croatia I think it's fair to say that Andorra woulda given the English a run for their money. Completely pathetic. No fluidity in their attack, tactically they were a mess...so called world class players looked completely ordinary. A few more of these type of displays and England will deservedly not be in the finals come 2008.
Cashley Cole looked woefully out of his depth at left back, and this for a man who many see as one of the worlds best left backs (not on that display Cashley)
Rooney looked outta sorts, and his slump continues...so too does Lumpy Lampard and the 18 million dollar, ineffective man Micheal Carrick. Shocking display that once again proves that England are overhyped, and no nearly as good as their press clipping would have you believe. |

i cant argue with what you said since the results speak for themselves but a majority if not all of the players on the english team are excellent performers for their respective clubs and these performances is where the hype stems from in the first place when they play for the national team.
All players have had fantastic days when playing for england but the sad part is that it seems to be one or two players per game so it seems pretty obvious that the problem comes from the management and coaching section because it takes a great coach to get a team to gel together.
All im saying is, i want to see the FA hire a coach who will be accepted by a large majority of the fans and media alike. If he also s up then it could be the lack of passion on the part of the players that is to blame. Get O'neil or scolari and il shut up.

Scolari was offered the job (although the FA will never admit it) but he turned it down because of the spot light cast by the English press on any and everything associated with the English national team. O'Neil was never in the frame because a) He's not English b) The biggest club he has managed is Celtic - and that's not nearly big enough to gain the experience required for International management. I'm not saying that Maclaren is the right man for the job, but I don't think O'Neil was ever in the running. Big Sam probably had a better shot of getting the job then O'Neil.
With regards to the English team, well I agree in principle that on paper and on the individual displays for their club teams they should rank as the top sides in the world. But as Real Madrid showed with its team policy, just having good players doesn't nessasirly mean you will win (or even play good football).
Current Problems with England
1) Rooney is in a slump
2) Robo Crouch can only score against teams of the calibe of Andorra/Jamaica etc..
3) Lampard and Gerrard can't play togather in the midfield.
4) Lampard can't score a goal to save his life when it comes to the international stage.
5) English defense looks shakey. On any given night, one of the big name defenders will look like a complete amatuer. Against Croatia it was Cashley Cole.
6) England still don't have a left winger...unless you count Downing amd everyone can see he's not up to the standard.
7) Carrick looks clueless out there.
8) McLaren doesn't have a clue what tactic best suits this team. He's gone through about 3 shuffles and England still look uncomfortable.
9) England doesn't seem to have belief when it plays - go back to the WC and you'll realize their best 45 minutes of football came against Sweden...and even that game they failed to win.
10) England seem to play with the wieght of the entire world on their shoulders, and it shows. There's very little creativity or joy in their play. |

| England missed Joe Cole and Aaron Lennon. Both players give the team width, pace and that extra bit of magic that can turn games. Gerrard is better employed in the centre of midfield with Owen Hargreaves are the defensive holding player. I would drop Lampard (who is obviously never going to translate his form with Chelsea when he suits up for the English team) and use him as a sub. |

Umm, First off, Scholes and Beckham play in two completely different positions. Beckham is a right sided midfielder when he plays for England (and that's where he's always been most effective). Scholes is a attacking central midfielder who sits just behind the strikers and links plays. Scholes was approached because England don't have that type of player currently. Cole is used on the left, otherwise he can fill that role, and Carrick and Hargreaves lack the attacking instincts to play in an advanced role.
Beckham time with the national team is clearly over. His natural replacement, Aaron Lenon is faster, more skillfull and more importantly years younger then Becks. Becks is finding it hard to get a spot on the Madrid team, so i think it's only fair he not be picked for the national team.
I don't think Scholes will return either, because of his age and commitment to United, but to say that McLaren should choose Becks instead of Scholes is incorrect.
I do however agree that McLaren is a fool...but not for the reasons you stated. ;) |

| Croats, if you guys have yesterday's toronto star lying around, pick that up and have a look at the sports section, then have a look at the standings in the group table, How the hell is England first when we have a +9 Goal difference and they're sitting at +4, both teams with 7 points...even if you went alphabetically, we're still first !:whip: |
