I disagree....i think we have enough of a thought process to realize what actions would make a positive society and what would not make a positive society...isnt it all commonsense?

I have a question for you, pardon me in advance for the sensitive issue and personal beliefs it might raise.

Are you operating on a self prescribed prerequisite that all your posts contain typographical errors?

ps: my previous post was simply tainted with sarcasm which you failed to detect.

no...i am lying on my side typing on a new laptop with keys located differently than my old comp.

i agree to some extent with Lira about his point of view.

religion is one of the largest contributing factors to the organization of societies.

is that to say that social environments can't form without religion? no. but historically i think it's played a huge part in the development of the world.

A world without religion would be wonderful.
Just imagine!

Religion has affected our society.

Then please tell me why the mushroom in your signature is carrying a star of David around his neck?

dont begin...this is boring...and so was sociology classes

You agreed that without religion there would be no societies...did you not?

Did you skip the rest of my post?

Anyway, the explanation would be as boring as your sociology classes, so don't worry - I'm not saying what you think I am.

i guess the thing i didn't understand about your post tiesto14...is the greeks/stoics aren't the first society :conf: and religion goes well beyond that into history...

It's nice to see someone that study engineering with such affinity with this more philosophical field (and I'm talking about that link you once sent me as well, thanks for that :)). What kind of engineering (is this the proper term?) are you into? Electrical, mechanical,...?

THanks :)

I'm more of a mechatronic engineer lol. Mix of Electrical and Mechanical engineering. You come to a stage where systems are so integrated that it's hard to say they are purely electrical or purely mechanical! System design and analysis makes it imperative to analyse both aspects of it. That's what I'm interested in doing. :)

My bachelor's is in Electrical and Masters in Mechanical !

But I've always had a healthy interest in physics, math and philosophy in general. And I'm very much interested in religious philosophical though. Since I'm more of a science guy I try to look at religion from a rational point of view, and I've almost convinced myself that the end goals of religion and science are essentially the same !!

Anyway, the problem here is that you're an individual. Even though societies are a group of individuals, I do wonder whether we can really apply these individual rules to society as a whole.

Let's suppose you don't care about your nationality (I know I couldn't care less about mine), you don't care about either science or philosophy, and you don't share moral norms with those around you. And, let's suppose the whole society you live in behaves like this.

What would the reaction of this society be to someone who believed in science, philosophy, religion or that had a specific set of morals? Would you consider this person as a "deviant"?

I tend to avoid this myself, but, as I said, I wonder whether a whole society could manage to do that without clinging to this nihilism...

Whether I am a vegetarian or not has nothing to do with anything.

Why would clinging to science be so bad anyway? Sure, you say people have to believe in 'something', but this can result in good moral human behaviour. If people were to believe in something real, like to believe in the actual existence of intelligent life instead of a fairytale god, wouldn't this in itself bring people back reality?

Every human conception of reality may differ from one individual to the next. Humans in packs, all with a similar ideology, can result in interesting behaviour. There is no denying that culture plays a big part in conception. Even if religion was erased, there would still be major cultural differences to carry the warfare flame.

There are too many aspects to analyse here. A human develops with so many influences & your question may not be answerable. A life span of human is relatively short and what a human learns can be biased. Educational systems change from one country to the next & morals can be seasonal. An individual like yourself, who has little interest in their nationality, has obviously been influenced via various opinions, either by talking to people (whom I have never met), reading books (that I have never read) or experiencing events (that I will never experience).

If you are asking me whether war will continue if religion ceased to exist, then my answer is yes, but there may be one less war if it didn't (2 wars is better than 3 wars).
