Review: Steve Porter & Alex Pearce @ Crobar

DJ A.K
Sorry if there is already a review thread somewhere... but I can't find it.

Ok, so DJ Eco, EnigmaT, and I (and various other non-TAs) got there around 12:45 or so. We get in, and some people I know standing around by the bathrooms/coatroom tell me that it's absolutely packed downstairs in the main room. A bit suprised, we head over to the dancefloor and found that it was indeed pretty packed (not Tiesto, but pretty tight). Looking around at the crowd, I can't say I was impressed. Schoolgirl outfits aside, there were a lot more angry, juiced up guidos than last week @ Hernan. Also, many of the people just didn't seem very much into the music --- a lot of people just standing by the bars and slowly sipping their drinks. The dancefloor was actually the tightest in the back of the club, toward that little counter that separates the main bar from the main floor. Right in front of the stage or under the booth, however, had a great deal of extra room.

But I haven't told the worst of it yet. Porter wasn't on stage, he was in the Crobar booth. That booth is so high up, that unless you're on stage, there's no connection with the DJ whatsoever. In fact, I had to guess based on style when they switched b/w Pearce and Porter. What made the setup worse was that they were putting on shows on the stage. Now, as fun as the shows may have been, Porter was actually slowing down his tracks to suit the needs of the show. Who does that? He played Pink Floyd's 'The Wall, Part 2' while a rather sexual performance was going on on the stage. He only returned to playing his usual house tracks when the show was wrapping up, mixing the original version of the track into some remix that I hadn't heard before, but which kicked ass.

Musically speaking, the set was a lot of fun. It was rather driving house with frequent breaks, something vaguely smacked of Armand van Helden, who is in my opinion a pretty good DJ. Porter dropped some great tracks, and so did Pearce (though I wasn't sure which was which), especially toward the end of the night, where one amazing track dropped that I couldn't identify though had heard many many times.

Final Verdict: The crappy setup and not-so-fun crowd really hurt the party overall, regardless of the quality of the music, which was pretty good. Finally, I can't say that this party can be compared to Hernan last week --- so I'll be looking forward to Chris Lawrence or G&D (w/ Jason Jollins!!!) next week!

man, im gunna be completely honest, i didnt like Steve Porter's set at all... i was expecting something else, but for Crobar New York, it just didn't seem to belong... now before you go on saying "hey, there's always tech and tribal and dark stuff going on in Crobar, it's good to have a break every once in a while", well this is true, and this is why i'll say i loved Hernan's set last week and Sander K's sets the times i've seen him but as far as last night, i wasn't feeling the music at all, and the pretty ignorant crowd wasn't either (it was reeeeeeeally a college-promoted party so you could tell half the crowd was out-of-town college kids that just went out because it was so heavily-promoted in their school)... the school theme was nice, i think they did a good job with it, not sure about the show, that was kinda out of place, or maybe it was just the killing of the house music into Pink Floyd that was a little awkward (not the DJs fault, i'm sure Porter really didn't feel like having to stop his set for the show)... but with that being said, i still think the music was subpar compared to basically all of my other nights out in Crobar... i love fun, upbeat, energetic, and feel-good house music but for me, last night, it just wasn't connecting with me... maybe i would have said "he rocked it!" had it been another venue but the Crobar vibe just wasn't agreeing with the music...

...on another note, i got 8 guys kicked out before i even walked inside the doors haha... i was on line with 3 girls, and 4 guys and there's this group of guidos from Queens (one of my friends recognized them) behind me, 8 of them, drunk off their asses... one comes up to me and is like "this is my in hat now" and they all laugh as he takes my hat... granted, i did drink but i was so no where near any type of mood to fight, so i turned around and said "who are YOU?" and the kid goes "haha.. who the are you? i'll kick your ass in 4 seconds" and he shoves me and his friends had the decency to stop him, and eventually i got my hat back... 3 minutes later, the dude's friend takes my hat again, puts it on his head and that was that... i turn around and inform them that "you guys are on the wrong line, DNA is in Queens, and i think it's closing in an hour, you better hurry up, you s... what is it, your first time to Crobar?"... and the kid goes "i'll ing kill you" so i turned around calmly and didn't say a word because i'm a regular at Crobar and i know how to get what i want without fighting... my group gets our ID checked and i tell my friends to go ahead, i'll meet up with them in a second... the group of Queens guidos approach the ID check... i walk up to the kid, take the hat off his head and say "next time you take someone's hat, know who the you're taking it from, the bouncers here know me" (not personally but they know i'm a regular, they say "welcome back" every once in a while) and alas, i had my hat... the dude bugs out and tries to punch me but the bouncers take care of him, and his 8 friends who are so visibly drunk, yelling at me and cursing my ma out... they throw them out and what do you know, there's cops RIGHT there who saw everything... i scream out "never come back to Crobar, DNA's where you belong, you s" and i walked in and got my comps 2 minutes before 1AM...

DJ Eco saving the world from guidos :toothless

These reviews are depressing and it's not just this one time. Not going to Crobar again unless I know 20 of you are going too.

any reviews from last month when SKRIBBLE headlined CROBAR? haha i wanna hear how the crowd was for that one....

Wow, good thing I went home for the weekend and missed that disaster. I'd be pretty pissed if I heard The Wall dropped in the middle of a house set. That said, I'm hoping the 18+ crowd at G&D next week is better.

Also, I want to take this opportunity to defend the minority of us 18-21 who are there for the music and not to jack anybody's hat. We do exist, just wanted to make that known :)

Finally, not to thread-jack, but does anyone know how the crowds at the Roxy would be when Rauhofer is there? I'm into that kind of house, but I have to admit that, as homophobic as this sounds, being hit on by a bunch of gay guys isn't my idea of a good time.
