Mac laptops

I am a college freshman and I need a laptop ASAP for schoolwork, I probably should have taken care of this weeks ago. I prefer apple computers, so I will probably be getting a Mac Book. My concerns are this:
If down the road I want to get Ableton or another music mixing / production program, is a regular MacBook acceptable or do I need a MacBook Pro? |

The Macbook (I have the 1.83) is FAST. Ableton and Reason run great on mine (even at the same time, rewired).
The Pro is useful if:
1. You need hefty 3D graphics (the Macbooks graphics card isn't as good)
2. You want a bigger screen
The benchmarks I've seen show that there's not much of a difference between the 1.83 and 2.0 ghz Macbooks, but I guess that's your choice.
With 1Gig of RAM, the 80gig hard drive upgrade, and AppleCare, it came in at under $1500. Not a bad deal at all...
Also, check out the refurbs on Apple's website (click store, on the left near the bottom is a link for it). They have refurbed Macbook Pro's for a significant discount. My friend bought one and it was in brand-new condition.

| I have the 2.0ghz model with 2gb ram... Like Ryan said, it runs Reason and Ableton very well; just do yourself a favor, and only run one instance of Reason or else major clippage occurs. |

Really?, has Reason gone Universal Binary yet?, I thought it was, I can see it clipping if its running in Rosetta, but if it is Uni then it should run fine with multiple windows open, my G5 runs it fine with multiple windows open. |

Yes it is a universal binary.

MAC ? eugh..
i think my setup is pretty much perfect, i will post pics of it when i get my digicam back.
PC (Watercooled AMD 4800+ dual core + 7900gtx sli + 1TB harddrive + 4gb ram)
with main monitor = 22" iiyama on left side of room
then directly opposite on another table:
2 x 1210's mk5
1 x ecler nuo 5
2 x krk rp8
then another "19 widescreen LCD monitor with the stand removed and fixed to the wall at head height running serato.
i think windows is perfect for production providing you have a decent system. At least when it comes to it, u can upgrade it without having to buy a completely brand new one. And like me, you can set ur production pc up with no internet connection and nothing else on but ur prod software.
works for me, and a HELL of alot cheaper.
unless u want mobility tho, but duno why u wud need that. |

You sure you got a good grasp of what can ACTUALLY been done with a Mac?
They are upgraded without having to buy a new one, and you can set these things up to run as minimal as you want... IIRC DannyO has nothing but Serato and Production software on his G4 iBook...
Don't know where your shopping but my MacBook was pretty damn cheap, in comparison to the super computer you have running..;) |

Yar I know... $1099 for the macbook. Throw another 512Mb in there and you have a damn fast machine, that's small and light, has great battery life, and looks nice. And it'll run OS X (whether you love it or not), and you won't have to deal with viruses, driver issues, etc. And it'll also still run Windows...
My friend bought a Dell laptop the same time I bought my macbook, and his laptop SUCKS. It weighs twice as much, and cost about the same. His battery lasts about 2.5 hours, mine 5.
And if this guy is looking at laptops, I don't think he wants a homebuilt behemoth with jet engine fans and neon ground effects like you built (j/k) :)
