I have a weak spot for vodka myself. I think I had about 12 or so vodkas at the Digweed show, so I can understand why he drank all of PVDs Goose.

Same thing with Houston. As in my other review either he figured out how to mix harmonically by ear, or figured out how to do it automatically in Ableton.

While Ableton like any other sequencer has independent pitch and tempo shifting you still have to know how to use it properly. There is no automatically mix everything in key button.

Right right. Was wondering since the Pioneer DJM 800 mixer claims to have sucha button:

Sound Color Effects For A New Style of DJ Mixing

The world’s first DJ mixer with Auto Harmonic Tuning detects the key of song and automatically corrects it to the closest true key. In music theory terms, when a DJ raises the pitch of a song in the key of C by three percent, the song is no longer in the key of C, but somewhere between C and C sharp. This makes it impossible to perform a perfect harmonic mix. Pioneer’s new Harmonic Tuning feature takes the key of the source audio and adjusts the pitch until it is that of a standard note.

Of course a DJ still has to know some basics about music, such as which keys match, in order to pull off an acoustically perfect harmonic mix. World class DJs currently spend thousands of hours learning the keys of their music and re-mastering their library to be in “perfect pitch”. Now the DJM-800 makes it easier to perform a “Harmonic Mix”.

“As the art of DJ mixing becomes more and more sophisticated, Pioneer raises the level of its equipment to provide the tools needed by today’s professionals,” said Karl Detken, director of product planning for Pro DJ products at Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.

Just was saying it wouldn't surprise me if Ableton had such a feature.

Im pretty sure what Matt is saying about Ableton is true with the harmonics. I am also pretty sure that pvd also has the newest and greatest version of ableton IF NOT a special edition that only some of the top dj's can get there hands on. Im not sure if djing is one of those things where the top people get the best stuff so that they always seem one step ahead of the crowd or not, but i know it's like that in other things. I mean they always adjust the sound when the head liner comes on to make them that much better, Why wouldn't they do other things for them.

Also Matt you said he was a bit sketchy at beat matching back in the past and that some of his tunes were a bit out of key. What i want to know if how did he make it so far up the ranks like that?

By all accounts the Pioneer 'color' effects on the 800 aren't all too hot. What Ableton does is automatically time stretches the audio files to the master tempo. You can choose for it to keep the original key or you can repitch if you want. There is also a dial to adjust the pitch as high or as low as you want to but no automatic pitch adjustment that takes all of the audio files and automatically repitches them to harmonize with each other. Basically you just turn the knob until it sounds in key, of course you still have to know if it is in key or flat or sharp by ear.
