This interview was released yesterday. The questions were sent in by many ppl and Tiesto picked some of them and answered them while touring Australia just recently.
Question 1 by Niels77 from the Netherlands
Dear Tijs, For how long do you plan to keep spinning in clubs, like you do now? I can understand you have to take care about your health sometimes. Could you tell us a bit about your plans for the future?
I will keep on spinning till i don't like it anymore,I have been working very hard over the last four years and will take more time for myself in between the gigs but still love it so much! I think i will never give up deejaying.
Question 2 by NoFear from the Netherlands
Please tell me, how small or big, what was your most memorable evening whenever you played your gig?
There is not just one most memorable evening, I had loads of them all over the world. Ups and downs, played for empty rooms, lost the mixing championshipsfinal back in 1992 because I was to nervous. First time innercity, magik party's in Oslo, last years homelands, dancevalley, tiëstosolotour, my us tour last year february and march, should I go on???
Question 3 by Tiestofanatic from the Netherlands
Hoi Tijs. Which DJ's/producers do you look up to and admire the most?
I admire every producer who gets me a brilliant record and keeps innovating.
Question 4 by Seline from the Netherlands
I know your music is or can be an expression of your emotions, but does your music make you feel who you really are inside?
Yes, defenitely. It makes me happy, have fun, enjoy and give me goosebumps.
Question 5 by Poisinous from the United States
What do u think about media linking the whole drug scene to the rave scene? Last year u were supposed to make an appearance in san francisco virgin records. U were coming from canada and when u didnt show up, the whole store said that u got caught in the airport with drugs...i dont wanna know if that was true, but its just an example of how they link drugs to us....u know??
The reason was that i didn't had a proper visa in my id. If i had drugs on me i wouldn't appear later for the gig, they would have thrown me out of the US. I think it's a bad thing because people enjoy the music also without drugs and so am I!
Question 6 by Thg1 from the Netherlands
How do you prepare yourself for a set, for example do you need 5 minutes for you're own, before you begin your magikal set ? I can imagine that you're nervous before you begin or not??
I was very nervous but as soon as the curtain came down i lost my nerves and enjoyed it. I prepare myself when i am back in Holland by spending days in the studio listening to records and produce new tracks.
Question 7 by Trans from Australia
What was your opinion of the perth (march 3rd - two tribes) crowd? Most international djs absolutely love perth for its always up for it crowd, most have commented on it being one of the best crowds they've played to and just love coming back to play here again. I was amazed at the size of the crowd that was there to see a trance dj! haven't seen a crowd of that size for a trance dj since... Paul Oakenfold 4 years ago.
I love being in Australia, I did Perth wich was absolutely fabulous and what a beautifull city, I hanged out there for a week, then did the gold coast and sydney wich was also great, and tonight 20000 people in Melbourne. It's been a great tour and i will come back next summer.
Question 8 by Foxtrot_yankee from the United Kingdom
Paul Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Tiësto Remix), I've heard a rumour that Paul is not happy with the remix and has asked you to do it again. I am confused as to whether this is true or not seeing as it is such a good remix. Can you clear this up for us?
It's just a rumour, Paul likes the mix but I think when you produce a track you always like your own mix better then the other ones. Same for me, I like picotto's mix of lethal industry but still prefer my own because that's excactly the way i wanted the record to be.
Question 9 by JohnC from the United Kingdom
How much time did you spend per day practing DJing when you started, and how much do you practice now?
I was practising every day for hours and hours. Now I practice when I am playing, I like to experiment a bit and still every week a few hours.
Question 10 by Xelius from Canada
When you release a mix CD that isn't performed live (Summerbreeze, for instance), do you mix it on turntables too, or is it done electronically in studio?
I have always done my mix cd's live on turntables and will continue with that. I am working on the new in search of sunrise now but it's hard to clear the tracks I want on there.
Question 11 by Amun_Ra from Aruba
I was wondering what influence love an friendship has on your career?
Everything because without the love of my mother and my friends I wouldn't be where I am today.
Question 12 by FMTrancemission from Canada
Who is your favourite DJ partner? Who do you like to produce your songs with? Do you like it more when you're doing it alone or with someone?
I prefer playing with deejay's who have a different style then mine. It's also better for the crowd so they hear different kinds of music. This is also the reason why i started my solosets because that allows me to play different styles of music in one night.
Question 13 by Dark_tenshi from the United States
How will you foresee the future of trance music. Most of the trance songs in 2001 have become darker and more progressive. Do you think this trend will continue or can we expect the come back of melodic/uplifting?
I still try to make uplifting trance but most of the records thast are released are boring cliche uplifting trance and I am not a big fan of that. I think the future for now is to combine different styles of music in one set, good quality trance will always survive.
Question 14 by Jaxx from Portugal
I just wonder how do you (great dj's), start all your career, built a future, what to do? Where to go? Who to know?
It's like becomming a profootball player, if you want to go to the top you have to give everything you've got, 20 hours a day. Buy records, listen to records, produce records, play records, hunt for records, experiment with records and create your own sound.
Question 15 by Oakeniesto fro the United States
I've noticed in the past year that progressive trance is at the forefront of the dance community, but I honestly feel that progressive trance is quite dull compared to what you spin-uplifting/epic trance. With all these DJ's moving more and more towards progressive, will you eventually?
I play what i like, there is a lot of boring music on every front but i feel i can't play records wich I don't enjoy myself. So, call it what you want but I do think progressive is the way forward but not how it has been done in the last year. We need progressive, uplifting original trance music.
Question 16 by Progressive_10 from Canada
Sometimes I hear people say that Tiësto rips Oakenfold off on the tracks you play. Personally I think it's utter bullsh*t but whats your feeling about it?
Well, people say what they want but have you listended to oakey's travelling cd/there are three records of mine on there!! But anyway, Oakenfold is a good friend wich I respect a lot. We both have our own taste and some records we both like, big deal. How many people played "Rapture"???
Question 17 by TaNGo from the Netherlands
What are your future projects? With who are you gonna work in the future to produce tracks? And for which artists are gonna do some remixes?
I just did a remix for Moby and that's it for a while, I will be in the studio to concentrate on my own stuff and do a couple of remixes.
Question 18 by Jade from the United Kingdom
What pointers can you give for aspiring remixers? Can you give some recommendations on equipment and any tips on how to make something stand out from the rest?
That's a secret, I won't tell you ;-)
Question 19 by Digi_flection from Canada
I was wondering on how and when you came about the stage name of Tiësto? Is there any meaning behind the name? How often do you get called by your first name anymore? Were you ever at one point DJ Tijs Verwest?
Tiësto sounds much better then Tijs doesn't it? It's originally from my nickname Ties and I thought, let's give it a italian swing and tiësto came up. I am very happy with that name now and there are a few baby's in Holland called Tiësto. I feel very honoured for that.
Question 20 by House4life from Canada
I read that you started your dj career with house music and then switched to trance and I was wondering what made you change you mind?
I felt so attracted to trance music, it gave me goosebumps all over and it opens people up. It's warm and mysterious. It's the best sound that ever happened to the whole houseculture.
Question 21 by MJrulz from the Netherlands
You said in several interviews that your dream for the future is to perform with a live band. What should we expect of this? Something like Faithless or are you going into a totally new style of music? And what would be your part in this?
Well, dream is a big word. I already feel most of the time I am living in a dreamworld and I don't have those plans yet. I am enjoying myself to much and need all my energy for what I do now.
Question 22 by Nothing from th United States
I was wondering, for your live sets, how preplanned are the tracks that you play? Do you know at the start of the night what tracks you're going to play, in the exact order? Or do you have a few you know you want to play, and mix them in along with whatever comes to mind as you're in front of the crowd? Or is it something else? Also, how do you find new music to play? Do people recommend things to you, do you listen to what other dj's are playing?
I get send a lot of promo's and people recommend me suff as well. I always make a big selection of 150 records when I go on tour. When I start playing I just start slowly and try to feel what the crowd wants, everything else goes spontaniously.
Question 23 by Scottyboy from the United Kingdom
I just wanted to know what it feels like when the crowd react to a tune that you have been involved with i.e. when the crowd sung along to Silence at Gatecrasher??
That is such a fullfilling feeling, you can't imagine. Playing that track at that time was so emotional for me and it will always have a special place in my heart.
Question 24 by Marcel Lasschuyt from the Netherlands
I was wondering, do you ever get bored by doing what you do now? The attention, the interviews, the performances wherever they may take you, the fans? I can iagine you sometimes thinking, today I stay in bed. Or do you still like it because you made work out of your hobby?
I am bored sometimes when I am driving to a gig or tired but as soon as I feel the appreciation of the crowd as I walk into a club, I feel great and full of energy. I consider myself to be one of the luckiest people on this planet and it is still my hobby. As soon as I don't like it anymore I will do something else.
Question 25 by Bullet from the Netherlands
Oke I have one, me and my friends discussed it for a long time. But on Dutch Dimension, if you needed to go to the toilet, where and when did you do that? Cause we never saw you leaving or something!!!
Haha, I had a private toilet at the back. I went 5 minutes before the curtain came down and also when Jan Johnston was performing I went for a big pee. That was around 2, But I can hold it for a long time tough and when I am playing I forget about everything.
Question 26 by eNZEN from Sweden
I Wonder if you could help me to find good dj equipment! What should I buy?
Depends on how much you have to spend. The best mixer for me is the stanton VRM 10 but it's expensive, about 3000 dollars us and the best turntables are the technics. |

Wow I can't believe he mentioned last years homelands! Well I can, coz I was there and it was a magical moment, it was early evening outside in a field and the sun was just going down, he played Ralphie B - Massive and it must have been one of the first times it was played. But still out of all the other places he's played in his life he chose to mention that evening :)
Great interview! |
