Review: Deep Dish (Dubfire) @ Ultra

The night started off with a bit of wet clothes and hair from the rainy walk to Ultra but once inside we were greeted with Mr. Barato warming up the room nicely. Nathan reads a crowd well and had everybody bumpin' and enjoying the earlier part of the evening.
Ultra was packed! It was nearly impossible to move downstairs (I don't go to Ultra often and it was a FilmFest party so I suspect this is not the norm). Around midnight we went upstairs to the patio and hid under a covered table. The DJ upstairs wasn't having a good night - playing the same track twice within a 90 minute period, sloppy mixing, etc. Mind you it was raining and the crowd wasn't into it, but still, put on a show (that is what a DJ is there for). About 1 AM we were informed Ali was on downstairs so we headed downstairs (it would have been nice to have the music ported upstairs, but alas it was not).
Film'ies aren't the greatest to party with (for me at least). Most were stumbly-drunk coke-bozos/bimbos who couldn't give a about anything beyond the tip of their nose. Luckily they get trashed early and by 1:30 most had left and by 2:30 they were all pretty much gone.
The group of TAs (and others) were a welcome bunch in a crowd of seemingly endless Film'ies. Great to spend the night with you bunch. Thank you.
The Dubfire... The man reminded me exactly why he is my favorite of the two. Most of his set was chuggy and dark tracks, mixed with the odd taste of the lighter fare to keep the Film'ies sane. It was just a great bloody set - no music/set complaints at all. He played some remix of Moby's "Go" around 2:30 which got the remaining die-hards dancing up a storm. Dubfire was using serato Scratch Live on a Mac laptop with the DJM-800.
If The Dubfire plays like he did last night @ Guv in October - WE ARE IN FOR A TREAT! Do not miss him @ Guv. |

One more thing: Last night reminded me why I don't like weeknight parties.
Being slightly hung-over at work isn't as much the issue (have something to eat, drink a litre of water and the nausea passes quickly).
What bothers me is the sluggish mental state and sub-prime efficiency that one goes through the next day. I enjoy work the most I get lots done, fly through tasks, innovate, invigorate, etc. If I'm not at 100%, I'm not 100% satisfied.
Weeknight partying requires careful consideration. Always.
But I digress...
The party was awesome. The Dubfire was... on fire. No regrets. ;) |

I am right there with you today, RJ. I had a blast and food, water, etc has done me good but my brain is on distraction mode hardcore.
My berfday kidnapping to Denver last night is making me a basketcase. The tunes were good - one thing I will say against Denver is that they SUCK AT DANCING!!!! They bob, sway, and hump - I was just dancing and people were staring at me like I was a freak I was moving faster than a snail. :whip:
I MISS TORONTO!
End hungover rant

| Absolutely an amazing party!!!! and Chinamon You should have came...hahaha:crazy: No complaints at all, a little busy with people just standing around but that is to be expected when at a film fest party/ultra. Dubfire was on his A game. Great beats. Very Nice opening set by Nathan Barato to warm up the crowd. |

Overall had a pretty good time. I'm surprised that when it started to rain a bit upstairs they didn't get the cabana things up...Mink, with a similar albeit much better patio, has a great contigency plan setup and within 5 minutes the rain is a thing of the past. We headed downstairs around 11:30 or so and caught a good portion of Nathan Barato's set. It was pretty good..no complaints @ all. Ali rocks...I still prefer Sharam out of the two (maybe because I have a tiny crush on him being so cute!!!) but he played some great tracks and is so dedicated at what he does. The intensity I see from both Ali and Sharam when spinning is a rare treat to see!
As for the club my first time there and it was an interesting layout. I like the hardwood floors though...definitely prefer them to the usual. |

The place was a complete zoo.
Crowd was terrible.
Stoli was a-ok.
Memory, not so ok.
If people can make their reviews as detailed as possilbe it would be greatly appreciated.
Help Sling remember his night.

Ryan it went like this...
You got there at around 10:45, you were wearing that blue collared shirt with the buttons that go snap. You slipped the bouncer a finsky to get you the good table, and he brought you to your seat, which unfortunately was occupied by none other than jon lovitz. You politely told him that although you loved his work in high school high, he was going to have to vaccate your seat. He threw a hissy fit and said that he was always unappreciated in this country and stormed out of the restaurant. I didn't see it personally but there are reports that he crashed his car into lake ontario, someone please confirm.
After that things appeared to be going smoothly until Jack Nicholson showed up dressed as the Joker. Apparently he too had been in a car accident and he reverted back to an old memory and actually believed he was the joker. While acting as joker he took you hostage, and if it weren't for quick thinking by Fuad to give him 14 shots of zambuca and have him pass out things could have gotten ugly, good job Fuad.
From then on in the night was perfect for you. You were like tinkerbell floating on air. At one point you got into the DJ both and got on the mic and said "can you smell what the sling is cooking", then took your shirt off and did some flexing moves.
Dubfire gave you a huge hi five and you jumped into the crowd rock star style and crowd surfed out of the building.
What a night you had!!! |

the Dub imo has always been better than Sharam. it's about time he's come back to canada. i still have a signed GU TO slipmat that i got for my b-day 3 years ago. the guy is the nicest and most genuine dj i've met.
sharam has a big head. :toothless |
