The core of ambient is beatless music, while downtempo is a term used to refer to electronic music that has a lower tempo compared to electronic dance music. |

| I don't know, ambient house usually has a beat or a pretty strong bassline, but I wouldn't call The Orb downtempo. Ambient tends to be more tracky, where as downtempo is songy. If that makes sense. |
