Yeah, but ambient house is... ambient house. House with ambient influences, not the other way around. The Orb, if we talk stuff like Adventures beyond the ultraworld, the higher-bpm tracks are fast enough NOT to be labeled downtempo, so ambient house is maybe what we could call it. Then there are some slower tracks with fairly emphasized rythms, those are the downtempo ones. And finally a few of the tracks are ambient music, beatless or with rythms moderate? enough not to catch your attention.
edit: however it feels rather pointless to label an album like that one track by track, even if they moved between different styles from track to track every piece of music on the album is linked to the others stylistically. It's like if a track maybe is 120 bpm with a 4 on the floor, then you lower the tempo to 90 bpm and replace the 4otf with a soft breakbeat. At that point it becomes a little pointless saying that it is one sort of music first and then it becomes another. |

| A lot of definitive ambient house (Chill Out, for example) is not particularly housey and the "ambient" side prevails. I think it's definitely possible to be ambient and still to have some form of beat. At the end of the day, "downtempo" means low tempo, doesn't it? Not very specific. I don't think you automatically draw the line between the two by whether or not they have beats. |

I know. There are types of ambient, offshoots and fusions that are not beatless, or have rythms created with non-percussive sounds/instruments. I totally accept that, and use the word ambient for non-beatless ambient myself. I think the technical aspects are one part of what defines a style, a computer can with the proper instruction analyze tempo, patterns and structures but then there are things only a human ear can tell, the feel of the music.
I try not to draw any lines, i approach the whole genre-thing with the view that genres and styles merge into each other in every direction. So i'm not really a genre-person, i try to use as few terms as possible and keeping it simple without being too vague, and if i use a super specific brand new genre name once in a while it's just because i think it sounds cool. :happy2: I don't believe in being too hardcore with defining music genres and subgenres and subsubgenres, because if one is serious with that, one has to take into account the complexity of the music itself, and that's just doomed to fail/make the person insane. |
