[REVIEW] PvD's new live skills with A&Hs XONE:3D

I'm a biggest fan of PvD. everything started when my friend took me to this under ground club called TWILO@NYC in 1999.

From my experience of PvD live, I always thought he is the genious in both producer and DJ in my opinion. Every time there is new product in line, he always try them and try to show us in different types of mixing..

knowing the fact that he brought the new mixer"A&Hs XONE:3D", it was a huge level up for his live performance "not dj mixing". He could lay down different beat into every sampler or vocal he plays. yes! he played same sampler or vocal twice in his vanguard gig, but he showed us how he could control the beat and bass in different way using new gear with his live performance.

He is pro in dj and producer, he had been mixing dance music even before the berlin wall came down. if he played the same track twice, there must be the reason for it.
from what he dose now days in EDM, he really deserve #1 spot in all the chart, not only the djmag chart.

I thought PvD's vanguard gig was "NEW!!" and it was BEST SET EVER! it was different. It wasn't track A -> track B transition dj mixing. He clearly proved what he could do with his new skill, and he was very smooth~ with it. it was really different from all other DJ.

PvD ADOPTS A&H’s XONE:3D
Words: Terry Church

Last year’s Top 100 DJs poll winner, Paul van Dyk, has adopted Allen & Heath’s groundbreaking new Xone:3D mixer to use in his DJ sets around the world.
The German trancer splashed out on two of the next-generation mixers (at £1650 each a pop!), one for touring and club gigs, and one for his studio.

"The 3D is perfect for my live set up as it's not just a mixer, it's also a controller, which means I can programme in real time using the unit's MIDI sends and returns," explained van Dyk.

"As soon as I got the 3D I configured it with all my software and it worked straight away.

“I use two computers with it - one loaded with Scratch Live using time-coded CDs, and the other with Ableton Live and all of my sequences and elements.

“I also have an E-MU keyboard, which records and plays back sequences.

“And at heart of all of it is the 3D, which controls and syncs it all.

“It's liberating - I'm constructing and creating tracks on the spot, and every performance is unique."

better tracks would make him a better DJ. less fluff. Not that I'm a hater or anything...his sets lately have been boring.

I thought his track selection was top notch this time.....
and he made it better with his tool.

Both his laptops Saturday night were running Ableton Live. Didn't see Final Scratch running at all.
DjWoody
He doesn't use Final Scratch, that's why you didnt see it. :stongue: :stongue:

He uses Serato Scratch Live.

You should read posts better.

He said BOTH laptops were running ableton live.

I read the post correctly... I didn't stated whether he was using SSL or not, I said he don't use FINAL SCRATCH. SSL and Final Scratch are two different programs. PVD hasn't used Final Scratch in a long time.

Oh ok, but that doesnt really matter if hes not using either does it? :p

Why would he need two separate laptops with live anyway.

And lol @ PVD

"“It's liberating - I'm constructing and creating tracks on the spot, and every performance is unique."

Yeah just like Sasha says, and in reality they arent doing much at all...
DjWoody
I hear you. I don't get why he needs two separate laptops. I don't get why he needs SSL with Ableton either. :( I know he used it on Friday here cuz he scratched, but you can't do that with Live.

On Serato's site, it says that Sasha is using Serato as well. hmmm... I wonder why? and how he is using it.

The more laptops and equipment in the booth, the more impressive it looks to a n00b. :conf:

Weird, I've never seen Sasha use Serato anywhere or in anyway.

I think Ruben is right. Just look at Jonathan Peter's booth.

don't know exactly what he dose up there, but one thing sure is, he is not playing the full track anymore, he splits the sound of the track using the ableton live and can control it manually using the mixer. well, he says it like "3D"..

-"and at heart of all of it is the 3D, which controls and syncs it all.

definitely his sound last fri at vanguard was unique, and his performance was smooth~.

can't wait for his next gig at vanguard again...
hopefully he starts bymonthly residency at vanguard soon like he did it NYC...
