[VGM Remix, Uplifting] Mario Kart 64 - Rainbow Road (3F05Q's Lead Foot Remix)

So I've been learning a great deal from this message board as a lurker for the past 8 months or so and thought it was time to get involved. I noticed the VGM Remix sticky and thought it would be fun, despite the fact that I wouldn't have had much time!

Honestly, I have a poor monitoring environment, so I don't have much faith in my mix. I suppose that's a reason for this forum though.

On to the topic:
After seeing what mixes were already in the works / reserved I browsed through some midi sites and stumbled across an old favorite of mine, and it turns out to be a good trancy tune. I hope I've done it justice:

You're right, this does make a pretty good trancer. Nice job on this!

I like the sound of the main lead, it works well for the piece... but it's a little bit harsh on the high end I think. Other than that, nice tune. :)

lol this is pretty cool the driving bass thing is a little 'sharp' though, kinda keels the pads/lead, low the volume by -1.0db or something and it would be cool but im sure i can numb it down with EQ or something

Thanks for the feedback guys! It's nice to know that only a couple little things are in need of tweaking. Good confidence booster I suppose.

I was hoping that my speakers were just 'bright' (they're small) but it seems the lead does get a little sharp at some spots. I'll get on that.

Thanks again,
Alan

interesting track.

first thing id too is have less high end on the bass just give it a little boost around the 1-4khz area take that crunciness off it.

nice melodies and good choice of synths although they sound quite 99ish their good for this time of music.

have you got a low pass filter on the kick? it seems that you have cut some mid freqencies that would give it extra punch.

like your GAT and leads. very trancy stuff you going on here.

nice reinterpretation of a brilliant game.

nice listen also!

keep it up!

dj_kane: Thanks for the feedback, and the specifics. One thing confuses me a little. "a little boost around the 1 - 4 khz area..." Could you explain to me how that works, and what I should listen for when tweaking that? (Do you mean that the boost in freq, when compressed, will lower the vol of everything else? Or cut a bit other than that range?) And I'll work on that kick... this afternoon, time for work. No time for trance now. At least I like my job.

Thanks again.

ok i cut my mid bass around 125hz then again at 270-350hz depending on other instruments to take the rumble off the bass. i boost around 1-4khz to give the bass that plucky sound that spreads throughout your mix.

i layer my bass so i would also have a sub bass with a low pass filter. cant really give settings as it depends on your kick and that is present.

hope this helps!

i really liked it freakin awesome!

Oh my gosh. This song brings back so many memories. This is really well done and incorporates the song and the new stuff very well.

Nice build up. It brings me back some cool memories too, and more cuz I had a hard time at the beginning to complete the rainbow world so the music just automatically got recorded in my mind. Nice job and keep it up m8.

Peace...

Thanks for the compliments guys.

New version up top, now with more fiber!

I toned down the super highs on the lead, fits in MUCH better with the mix. Also, toned down the highs on the bass (beginning sounds a bit dead now though, can't win em all.) and tried to get more out of the kick.

I left the original version up, because options are good.

I did not like this. The levels are all wrong.
The lead is too overpowering. The bass synth is weak, it sounds muddy. The percussion can't even be heard throughout most of the track. Consider transposing the lead down one octave. That ultra bright sound just sounds cheesy. Sorry for all the negative comments, it's a good effort though, you should probably have worked more on it.
