I'll be doing alot of travelling during the snowboarding season and we will be filming so I just really need to have something portable, that i can link my digi cam and camcorder up to, and have it store some music....wifi a must too!

yea man definitly all you will need is probably the Ilife 2006 package....they have the video editing on there that runs on low mem and Iphoto will be good for ur pics

also I think they all are equipt with Airport ;)

ok newb mac alert but wtf is an "ilife" package" lol i'm assuming its a software suite like how MSFT bundles their office package...also wtf is 'equipt with airport'? it's got an airport of some sort that is controlled by the laptop?

what should i expect to shell out for something like this?

Ilife is sorta like that but not for Office Applications or that type of stuff. In Ilife you get:

Iphoto (The easiest way to import, organize, edit and share your digital photos)

Garageband (The best way to record music on a Mac is now the best way to record podcasts, too)

IMovieHD (Turn your home video into home cinema and share it with others)

IWeb (Easily create beautiful websites and blogs and get them online — fast)

IDVD (Author and burn movies, photos and music to standard and widescreen DVDs)

Airport is what Apples wireless is called. Built in Wirless finder with a great range and simple to use for Wifi

The Ilife costs just 100 bucks.

I calculated the lowest end macbook and Ilife and it came to 1200.

I'm assuming the 'lowest end mac' will be able to run all of the ilife applications? lol

again as stated, needs to run the ilife apps, store my music, store my photos, and connect me to the net. Run some basic apps like outlook or another email exchange application, browse the web, instant messengers, yea thats about it

Wow great thread :D. I have a desktop PC and i'm in desperate need of a laptop. My current living situation won't allow me to record sets unless I have a laptop by my decks. I was thinking of a pc laptop or a mac. Looks like i'll be going the mac way, iLife sounds pretty badass :p
kid nyce
yea bas im in the same situation, minus the recording sets stuff, but an all around reliable laptop to connect to the net and handle some small video editing and picture editing is all i need.

i look at the mac book and its only a 13" and wonder if the extra $800-900 is worth it for a mac book pro 15" granted i'm not gonna need a huge screen, maybe the smaller and more portable the better off i am in this case...would like your opinions if maybe i'm throwing away money for what i plan on using it for.

so tell me for my needs is it worth it for a pro 15" or would a 13" mac book suffice?

really appreciate everyones help here, complete mac noob but i sense it'll benefit me more in the long run then a pc laptop (which i already have but is kinda too big to travel with)...provided that the battery doesn't explode on me =P

the macbook would suffice...but its up to you how much money you want to spend. you could even throw some more ram into the macbook.
kid nyce
will i be disappointed in the 13" and processing power? i know some applications can get heavy in terms of memory usage like photoshop/illustrator.

it sounds like the macbook is where i am headed with some upgrades in memory and maybe even hds.

i think my apprehension stems from the pc point of view where bigger better more ram faster comp...overkill is better than dying crawling mentality thats all....

Macbook - basic use
Macbook Pro - Nerds & Doing graphic/edit work

I have the macbook pro as i do some production and music edit work on it.

If you get the Macbook you will not be disapointed the processing is fine its just the basic laptop. Its the one made for just common use "personal computer" type.

I think just get a quick mem upgrade for the regular macbook and your good.

Bas go for a Mac I love recording my sets in them. You dont even need any of the ones i use (Ableton, Cubase, Audacity bla bla) to record in it already comes with the basic version of garageband which you can record in. Definitly go for a mac (im bias though :stongue: )

I bought my Powerbook G4 more then a year ago. It is my first mac and I will never change to PC/windows anymore. The system just never crashes, spotlight is great when searching for files. The way the system works is just very logical and relaxed. Here at my school I often have to do presentations, it always funny to see that classmates are all the time trying to get their windows laptop working with the beamer. When it's my time to present it takes about 10 seconds to get my powerbook working with the beamer. :D

Besides surfing and schoolstuff I mainly use my mac for:
Final Cut Pro
Motion
Recording sets
VJ-ing
Photoshop
