But yeah, I have noticed that DJ's like Digweed, Cattaneo, Howells, Fair, Moshic, et. al. switch up tracklists more frequently than the likes of Above and Beyond, G & D, Armin, Tiesto, Markus Schulz, et. al.

I think theres quality in every genre it just depends who is big in that genre and what they are pushing right now. The house DJs tend to try and find their own little niche's within the broad spectrum of house/prog/tech, so fans of theirs are exposed to more variety. The trance DJs tend to stick to more known , and more of them are playing tracks that their peers are also hammering. Theres not enough uniqueness in sound, unless you are absolutely gaga for all those tracks, in which case it doesnt ing matter, and alot of the newbs just getting into trance are like that ( I was once, I can dig up some pretty funny posts).

Dude, you have seen the light. Danny Howells is your new favorite DJ. Always fresh.

I get bored of tracks after playing them in my bedroom twice. I dont think the tracks suck, I just want fresh music, I wanna keep it rotating, keep it eclectic and varied. I wanna take people different places, places they havn't been, so that almost no two of my sets are ever very similar... Theres SO much of it out there, that your collection can keep going on forever...why stop at the latest new releases in the one or two genres you stick to?

I like alot of trance but I just cant keep hearing the same over and over, I even get annoyed when Sasha whores a track too much...

I've never heard the same Danny Howells sound twice. If you compare, for instance, his GU Nubreed, his '02 Essential Mix, his GU027, his Nocturnal Frequencies series, and his livesets from Charlotte or Redlight... they're all COMPLETELY different. He never fails to amaze.

And yeah, Sasha can get a little too into a tune, but in his defense, he does a lot of different things with the same track, and only canes it for about 6 months rather than 6 years (I'm thinking of Ferry, PvD, and Tiesto here). Besides, he also overplays other people's tracks, and not his own.

Well, I owe a lot of it to the fact that I took up dj'ing myself. This is not a bad thing but has definitely broadened the possibilities of music that I listen to. So for me, who pretty much every day is looking to keep the mix fresh with new tunes goes to see a dj like Armin in June and then again in Sept, I don't expect him to play the same songs really. And this is an example because he honestly didn't play a lot of the same things but there were some tunes there that I had already heard. My point on that is this, he is one of the biggest name djs out there with every song available to him that he can possibly want. So why play the same track even twice 3 months later? I just can't see myself doing that. Sure, I get on this kick where I like a certain track but even after a little while it loses its appeal that it first had to me. I dont get how these guys can get so excited over the same track every time they play out. But then again, I guess if I ever get to play in front of thousands every week it may change my opinion.

This isnt Trance vs House really, just an observation I have made over a short period of time. I could be wrong. :)

Werd :)

Haha, funny you should say that. I was listening to a set of his in my car earlier, on my way to work. Was pretty good but I'd have to acquire a taste for it at some point to really get into it. Steve Lawler is definitely my new hero right now. Right now I'm thinking I should have held off on my DJ Mag vote until after I saw him this coming Friday. ;)

Absolutely. Howells is able to take tracks and make them his own and integrate new sounds into his sets rather than being the same year after year like some djs. This is why he stands the test of time for me. There's always going to be something new and interesting in his sets which compromise of many different genres most of the time. He also is a dj that came from a trance background. IMO Howells is the best dj on this planet.

Yeah, hes more fun live. I never really get into his sets at home, but man, just go to a howells night and get drunk, its a guaranteed good time. I've seen him three times this year, and each one I had a great time and he played completely different music each time.

November 4th in NYC @ Pacha is Howells Round 3 for me....I'm still finding IDS from that mindblowing PawnShop set in miami....

2006 March 26 - Danny Howells @ Pawn Shop [Miami, FL]

This Is NOT in Order:
Marco Bailey - "Bullocks (Gabriel Ananda Remix)"
Pig and Dan - "Micro Kitchen (Original Mix)"
Nathan Fake - "Outhouse (Umek Remix)"
Massive Attack - "Unfinished Symphony"
Onionz - "Pokin U"
16B - "Escape"
Fairmont - "Gazebo"
Cirez D - "Punchdrunk"
Onionz - "Play Dat Song"
Lostep - "Because We Can"
Someone Else - "Picture Perfect (Adam Beyer Mix)"
Stephen Bodzin - "Marathon Man"
Adam Beyer - "A Walking Contradiction Part 2"
Theo Parrish - "Falling Up (Carl Craig Mix)"
Cirez D - "Deep Inside (Adam Beyer and Joe Mull Remix)"
Chicken Lips - "White Dwarf (Josh Wink Vocal Reinterpretation)"
The Timewriter - "The Waterfront"
Johnny Arthur - "Evil Edna (Deetron Remix)"
Layo and Bushwacka - "Feels Closer (Extended Mix)"

Noone is able to put together sets mixing Ambient, House, Techno, Tech-House, Electro, Progressive House, Disco House, Trance, and Drum and Bass better than Howells. By far the best and is able to hold a crowd 10 plus hours. I wish I was up in Montreal last September when He and Digweed were tagging between their 6 hour sets....:eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :tongue3 :tongue3

yes of course the mixing is awful these days but this thread is about track selection only, and he's spins a version of trance, well it's more trance than house anyway

not really, there was a phase in the hardcore scene when it was very good. This was before it decided to try to appeal to little kids with pointless lyrics & sounds. If you found some hardcore sets from 1993-1997 especially, there were some great sets & tracks making the rounds. It was nothing like it is now, and where the DJs were just as respected, if not more, than the trance djs of today.

I'll be honest, there IS a problem with trance, with dj's such as armin, tiesto, pvd, even ferry which im sad to say as a huge fan in the past, that with the birth of internet radio & a bit of laziness on their part, a lot of trance does sound the same, or comes off as being tacky & boring. The fact is though that the word trance, like the word house, covers a much broader spectrum than just what 4 djs & their followers play. It takes a lot of patience to find these artists, but once you have, you can be just as content in yourself as you always were, and appreciate it the same. I find a lot of house dj's to play a lot of their own stuff just like trance dj's & a lot of it seems uninspired & boring to me, but I don't openly accuse the whole genre of being , i just let it get on with what it wants to, and the people who like it listen to it. In your first post, your opinions insinuated that nearly everyone would leave ALL trance, and that's the bit I disagreed with, as a listener to variations of the genre for over 10 years now.
