so, how does that fit into your argument jay?

my mother is catholic... im not..

so how does that one work?

Talk to an orthodox jew about a non practicing jew married to a non jew and im willing to bet on what theyd say...

i believe the word disowned would be in there somewhere.

I never used the word racist, I understand the term well enough to know that it would be a misuse.

I say the term offensive, because you are offensive. History is separate, this is more about respect for other cultures.

Ignorance exists amongst all cultures, I agree. However disrespect is also a form of social ignorance.

If you have a question ask it again, or move on. I really dont feel like fishing through this crap to determine what your question is.

i agree.. and i my argeument was about the fact that people dont have respect for canadian culture. I have not shown any disrespect toward anyone. All i have done is point out an incident in history and conveyed my disgust at the ignorance displayed in that conversation that i had. And the whole "european" conversation has been had many times.

So I stand up for myself and you find it offensive. I find that laughable.

i bet if the tables were turned and someone said "italians" will never be canadian enough youd be standing up for yourself like i was. But of course, in your case it would be ok wouldnt it?

I see the point you're trying to make Jay, but that Byzantine reference was really not necessary.

Others, try not to get Jay get underneath your skins. He has tendency to say things in rather... inflammatory way.

I'm not disputing the fact that Byzantines did once conquered Italy for a while. I am disputing the necessity of it in this debate.

you are offensive because the way in which you make blanket statments on others' cultures is offensive. You could say that "all ________ people are ____________" and it would be the same nonsense that you said here that I found offensive. I never once disputed your statement about "the rape" of Italian people, but by saying that you imply far more, and you know that. Nevermind that is was simply uncessary. I could explain the crusades, the holocaust, slavery of african people...etc etc many ways, the point is WE DONT.

Why? because it is disrespectful and to do so would be offensive.

Stand up for yourself, as I am. And laugh, in each others faces.

as for your one last attempt to pull on another cultural chord, I would be just as offended with your example as I would be if someone said that "all __________ people are not Canadian enough". This not an Italian only issue, I am Canadian. I see from a Canadian perspective.

The term mangia-cake, is derogatory. Just like term W.O.P and all the uncessary terms given to show ignorance and disrespect related to culture.

It is never ok.

so its disrespectful to talk about history? i guess my history teachers never got that memo!

wow... thats a very sad statement to make.

Also ive never made a derogatory comment. All i did was state a historical fact. If this is offensive i feel sorry for you.

As for making a blanket statement. I said that many times i have had this conversation and that "most" people of italian decent in Canada (among other cultures) act this way. And there is no denying this no matter how much you want to whitewash the concept. Of course there are exceptions but give me a break!

Revisionism for the sake of political correctness is not a game i wish to play.

As fot he crusades and the holocaust and so forth, here is something to ponder:

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it!

"Most" people of Italian decent...bla bla - Blanket statement, a lie, and is ignorant

"Nothing is more terrible than to see ignorance in action." - Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

That is ignorance in action.

The "exceptions" are the people you are refering to, the majority are the people I am referring to.

Revisionism for the sake of political correctness - interesting, in the context of a girl who knows little about "her" culture, we now arrive at the history of the rape and pillagment of the Italian penninsula nevermind the distorted connections you are making, but the overal picture of individual ignorance of the subject (girl) and its relation to this blanket statement of ones' Italianess and ones Canadianess is absurd.

In this case it is revisionism for the sake of absurdity based on blanket statements which serve to support your distorted ideas of the exceptions found in all cultural groups.

oh and your quote, i fixed it.

Those who fail history class are doomed to distort it, and find minute examples to support that which they attempt to prove.
