..More important than the number of syllables is the style. You shouldn't just split a normal sentence into three lines. Continuity is maintained because each line contains an image that is linked conceptually to the rest of the poem. Use comparison, contrast or association. The point of a haiku is to express as much as possible in as few words as possible. Without these considerations there is no artistry in it at all.
eg:
Anything can be
A haiku as long as you
Split the lines up right.
...That's not haiku
References to the natural world or the human condition are common. Most old-school haiku contain references to the natural world or kigo (a word that indicates what season the haiku was written in, like a reference to an animal or fruit of that season aor the moon etc)
