No middle ground...?

I've noticed with a lot of the "top" DJ's tracklistings that none of them seem to play a good variety of new and older tracks. Either all they play is newer tracks OR they play a bunch of old and expected ones.
I would really like to see a DJ play a 3 to 4 hour set with the their favorite songs of the recent years. I think there is something to be said about throwing down a good amount of old but great tracks for the sake of the quality of the track selection AND nostalgia.
Think about it. If "DJ " plays a couple hours of just NEW songs and 50% of them are crap. Why can't they simply play that 50% of quality music AND fill the rest of the 50% with older GREAT tracks that they know used to fill up the floors and get crowds going nuts.
It seems to me that DJ's just wanna play all of the NEWEST stuff and personally there is only a handful of NEW tracks out there at a time that you can actually call "quality" ... why not replace all of the filler tracks with good oldies, cause there are plenty of them which haven't been overplayed OR even played in a long time that would make a set much richer and have much more quality over all.
Anyway... All I'm asking for is a good middle ground. Seems like that is too much to ask for. |

DJ culture isn't that obvious. The idea is to gradually build up a set, and that includes songs that may seem bad or deemed as fillers by some, but help to work up the set. The set is a big puzzle where the DJ brings in different pieces of it at a time, mixes them together, and by the end of the night you're supposed to see the big picture.
This is especially true for Progressive DJs, but tends to be true for a lot of the good DJs in general.
The idea is not to see John Digweed drop Bedrock's "Heaven Scent" every set, but to let him expose you to new music and new sounds.
Let go of your Ybor City/Amphitheater mentality. Most of the Ybor DJs play the same records they played 5 years ago, and that's all good and fine if you're going to a more commercial party. However, if you're a global DJ you're there to play the best new music from across the globe that you've found or have signed to your label/s.
Now if it's an "oldskool" party then hell yes - break out those gems from yesteryear. |

The age of music doesnt matter, theres only good or bad music. Obviously you dont want to play the same tired old obvious 'classics', but theres nothing wrong with playing the older tunes. |

I never said to drop an old favorite EVERY time... enough DJ's do that TOO MUCH (Tiesto's "Traffic" anyone?). Obviously it's a DJ's job to introduce the community to new music but not when a lot of the music they are showing us is crap and feels like they didn't have anything better to play, but for the sake of it being "new" they went with it by default.
I DEFINITELY don't have an Ybor City mentality. I have loathed Ybor ever since I moved here 8 years ago. The fact that DJ Icey plays Tampa almost every other month sickens me. I haven't gone near Tampa in a LONG time. I drive every year to Miami for Ultra and WMC JUST so I can get some good quality music LIVE. Anytime there is a big event in Florida I try to make it there, Tampa offers nothing of what I would call "quality."
The quality and quantity of music produced now-a-days is quite off balance than how it used to be IMO. There is sooooo much being produced now but so little of it is actually "GREAT" stuff. I would rather hear a DJ throw down all of the truly great NEW music with the rest of older tracks. Not even as far back as 2002, I'm talking about last year or the year before that. There are plenty of GREAT songs that have gotten tossed in the record collections that should be still played today. All I'm saying is since the quality of some genres of music has gone down it really wouldn't hurt to make a stronger set out of the better music of today and the better music of before. |

On my latest demo I have tunes from 1995 - 2006.
I am trying to do exactly what you are saying. I have like decades of music at my disposal, why on earth would I want to limit myself to the last 6 months/year? |

quite frankly, the biggest jocks, in all genres, play the latest tunes mostly in the sets because that's more or less how it always been done. ever since knuckles, hardy and the others in chicago. i think it isn't because it has been that thing always to play new & exciting music. stuff you shouldn't know about. it's just with the revolution of the internet that everyone can get every track that part of that mystique has gone.
i think that yes, dj's should use more of the music that has been released, but the in the sense that they should actually explore the musicworld and just dig the crates/cdboxes/whatever to find good music that was ignored and just whack it in, give it a revival or sorts if they feel that the music that is out there isn't satisfying. |

What? That wasn't a "music-related" comment?
Fine, I'll stick to putting up jpeg's of my oil canvas paintings of Ferry Corsten and talking about DJ's favorite kind of socks. |
