Great set Martin! Full review to come tomorrow, but I got the chance to hear it finally from start to finish and I really liked what I heard. Must admit that the hype was a bit too much from some people but you'll know how I feel tomorrow night when I post the full review.
For what it's worth [even tho the set itself is quite different from Steve Lawler I have to say] and I know he's one of your favorites but, as far as imagination and atmosphere are concerned: CREATOR >>>> LAWLER :D

+1, and also I believe Creator's style is most defined compared to all other locals in this city |

The opening is, for lack of a better word, amazing, it reminds me of your 6 hour sets and the atmosphere that you maintain through-out, very dark and creepy and excellent use of vocal-sample, the beat that comes in is catchy and very easy on the ears. The electro is remeniscent of Lawler (part of the reason for the comparisons) The 4th minute is bliss and pure Creator trademark with the dirtyness and the unexpected but very appreciated short LOUD machine-noise. The beginning is very industrial over-all, a style that is very dear to my heart, with airplanes and machinery co-existing in perfect balance. Around 6:29 I just wish I was in a car, it's puuuurreee driving music with the top down and big smile on the face kinda like
The hydrolics that follow are wonderful but not emphasized enough for my liking, I love love love 14:25, with the music sounding like it could be a voice supported by those hypnotizing hydrolics :D.
The 17th minute brings me back to the 6-hour-madness you unleash so well, it's truly remarkable how well you defined your own style,
One of my personal favorite moments comes in around 21:40, you can hear the rock influence and it's expertly used with accordance to the proggy/electroness that marks the whole track.
27th/28th minute: the craziness is a bit too much for my liking but it quickly disintegrates into grooviness that sounds like it's accompanied by tribal androids banging metal with metal. There's a great sync of nature (with the real tribal sounds, vocals,) and industrial, a theme I see you're keeping from beginning to end: truly impressive.
Missy Eliot's samples are great, I love the use of "my style can't be duplicated or recycled" and this is one of the peaks as far as imagination and atmosphere are concerned and how you prove you're above Lawler who's too much of a diva to care anymore about things like this (in my opinion he's un-versatile).
44.25: :eyespop: , this is the kind of darkness I was expecting to hear through-out the whole set, very mellow but so engaging as it beckons you toward a mystery.
54th/55th: the vocals become too much as they overlap over each other, im not a fan of these kind of vocals. This track seems to be on a lower level as far as originality is concerned. It sounds like the producer was a little lazy and if i was to hear it in the club it would be the point at which I would sit down and rest a bit, maybe your intention was a little breathing space between which is understandable but somehow the quality seems to be sub-par compared to the rest of the set.
The Jesus track: this could be the tranciest I've ever heard you, the vocal sample is daring to say the least (I have no problem with it but I can see how a lot of people could) but its the melodic euphoria that accompanies it that makes me wonder. It sounds very nice but seems out of place with the whole feel that the set has been buidling up to that point if you know what I mean, darkness followed by tribal mystery followed by more darkness and then near the end when the set ought to be continuing the trend and building up on it, it does a sort of 180 on you with the euphoria. After it's over tho, around 1:04:05 things pick up where they left off a few tracks back and 1:08 is the full-circle affect I love so much, reminding you of the beginning: I absolutely LOVE that eerieness with the distorted vocal and the horn that sounds like something vikings used as a signal for battle. Spectacular. Computerized bleeps lead to the wonderful Nirvanaesque vocals of 1:11:30 that your 6-hour-sets utilize to great effect. I can only hope I'll be hearing this track one day on the floor when you spin it  it's a great way to end your set because it leaves the person wanting more and that's always the desired effect. It's my favorite track by far, odd samples here and there + windy distortion + powerful main vocal + awesome buid-up = G.O.L.D.
Over-all: 8/10
A great set, not too hard which was probably not your intention anyway as it does feel like good 'home listening' but I'd say best suited for a car. Not as dark as the hype from some people here suggested, for me your best moments are the 6-hour sets you unleashed at Aria (and will hopefully in the future at a new place?) and I cherished the points in the set that brought me back to those good ol' nights. There was a specific point that came with two tracks, the one at 54/55 and the Jesus track, which felt out of place and a little off with the rest but the finale more than made up for it. Your imagination, ability to create eerie atmosphere, use of vocals and overall versatility that still manages to stay within a defined boundary of sound is what marks you above any other local in Montreal at the moment and above A LOT of internationally aclaimed DJs.
Keep up the great work, I can already sence that your productions will amaze us, and I can't wait to experience your sound on the danceloor again!
Cheers for sharing your talent with us.

Ps: sorry if the minutes and hours thing was annoying, I didn't download the cued-files :wtf: |

great review as always nick.
actually the jesus track really worked for me and provided the set with a little diversity and unexpectedness. When you catch your listener by suprise in a positive way it can help in creating a lasting impact imo.Pure boom boom boom anyone can do. |

Even though that I agree with your statement, I also feel that the jesus track was a bit odd. That triangle synth reminds me of the trancey days :)
But anywho, it doesnt matter, most dj sets have a couple of odd tracks.
I don't think, however, that pure boom boom boom can be achieved by anyone, but thats probably because we have different ideas about purity :P |
