It's not a cheap product but for what it is it's very cheap. Most scalers and switchers tend to be much pricier.
Buying an HDMI capable player doesn't mean it can output Full HD ( 1080P ).
There are only a handful of models of dvd players that are capable of doing. This will be something of the past pretty soon apparently as the manufacturers of players and HD sets are focusing for the new generation of products to include scalers.
As of right now the cheapest dvd player capable of 1080P upscaling costs around 150~160 US$ and the results with these are far from being the best yet as to reach such a price point there needs to be concessions made with the components used. |
True, but there there isn't any programming content out there worth worrying about 1080p either other than to stroke one's ego I suppose. |

for those who have bought from the major brands,
what kind of warranty come with the TV.
i was going through the Samsung website and it said something about only 1 year warranty for parts and labor. i was expecting a bit more, at least 3 years, but hoping for more like 5. i mean if you are spending a lot of money, you kinda want a longer warranty, NO? |
|

| i think i got 3 years for a samsung, with the store extending it to 5. |

traditionally manufacturer warranties are fairly short with the maximum being perhaps 2 or 3
years.
If you are so concerned about warranty you can get an extended warranty through the point of purchase, and there are also certain companies who provide all inclusive packages with warranty+annual servicing free of charge ( useful for recalibration, fluid replacements ( that's not the exact term I completely forgot it but this applies I believe in dlp sets?! ) etc ).
Not that this applies to this situation as the technology is totally different but when I was growing up my family got a 27 inch crt in the 80s. They were pretty rare at the time ( in Europe at least ) and the set cost the equivalent of 1500$. It worked fine for about 13 years till problems started occuring. Not a bad run in my opinion...I would expect something fairly similar with a plasma or lcd.
Then again what I am saying is fairly pointless because product recalls are so common these days, quality as a whole has taken a hit and with the rush from manufacturers to get new products out well .... things are obviously not as reliable as they used to be.
When I was working with Sony Panasonic Philips etc ( all the big players ) I noticed that so many of the companies don't produce their own parts any more apart from the cabinet ( for example with plasma and lcd where there are only a handful of actual manufacturers ).
This creates bigger problems down the line with parts quickly becoming unavaiable as the big brands are switching suppliers all the time.
I had this particular situation where I needed to source a DLP lamp for a Philips set for Best Buy service centers around the US. They seemed to all be getting the wrong part ... well after investigating the matter further I noticed that the set had been changed throughout its production period ( which Philips somehow didn't know ?! ) and there you could the same lamp but made by three different manufacturers which all used different connectors ( it was a stroke of luck when you ordered the part because despite the fact they were different they all had the same part number ) ... total nonsense ... a perfect example of a mess created by vital parts outsourcing.

I don't have anything HD, but my uncle has it, as well as my friend.
It seems to be nothing but a headache. But my uncle has a sunrise channel or something, and it plays HD videos of beautiful sunrises in the morning. He says that makes it all worth it. |
