ha! Occasional? I work with preteens and teens in my internship for grad school, and even tho I love them to death, you really have to be a tough cookie dealing with them on an everyday basis. I love em but they are EXHAUSTING!!

That's what I figured. I couldn't teach preteens, I give you a lot of credit! I was hoping to be a high school teacher. I think they're a little more civilized than younger kids. However, I do remember the way I was in high school.

Last Thursday I decided that I was gonna stop. Friday was hell. I wanted to smoke all day. Saturday wasn't much better since I went out to a bar by me. I don't know how I did it, but I didn't smoke all weekend.

Teaching isnt something you do for the money. In order to be a good teacher you need to love it and not care about the money. So if the money is what's preventing you from being a teacher, then i think your heart isnt all the way in it and it wouldnt be the best idea. So i would stick with the electrician job and kno you have a good paying job that you can rely on getting a paycheck that can support u and your future family. Obviosuly that is your main concern right now so that's what i would do.

Hmm thats a hard decision to make. I'm biased however since I'm currently a HS math teacher. I think teaching is great...most of the time. The kids are definitely hard, but if you have a good administration that supports you and supplies you with all the resources you need than the kids are not so hard to deal with. Teaching is also great since you have a paid summer vacation and you get all the other breaks as well. So you could even find another job during the summers to make some more money.

If you get your masters done with before you start teaching than the money isn't that bad either. Maybe even look at school districts that pay more. I'm currently considering working in westchester. And again, you get job security since math teachers are a dime a dozen.

But on the other hand this electrician thing sounds great.

So here's my advice to you. Start this electrician gig and see how you like it since you already have the job lined up. If you end up loving it than stick with it. After all you could always go into teaching later on. I know tons of people who had other professions and jobs and went into teaching later on. I hope I'm making sense. Well either way, good luck with whatever you decide.

I completely agree with your comment. However, when making a career decision (whichever I choose will be my career), one has to take into consideration the amount of money that is involved. In a perfect world, I would love to teach. Perfect meaning I went to college right after high school (which I didn't do). I don't want to have a low paying teaching job then having to worry about paying for school to get my masters. BUT on the same token, I want to have an influence on kids lives and provide for them someone to look up to, in some cases. That's the part I'm torn between.

Still undecided and not smoking (although I nearly stopped to buy some on my way to school this morning).

Alright, about two years ago I applied to apply to become an apprentice in Local 3. Local 3 is the electricians union in NYC. And yes, you have to apply for an application. My dad has been in the union for nearly 30 years so I figured I'd give it a shot and see what happens. Everything went well, including my interview which was so long ago I don't even remember the month. That went great. After I took the interview I was all ecstatic about becoming an electrician. The money is fantastic, FULL benefits for my family (when I get one), raise every year, the works. The downside is you work outside most of the yearand you wake up around 4:30am to be at work at 7am. During the time in between my interview and now I decided that I might want to become a math teacher. I enrolled in school at a local community college with the intentions of graduating from there and going to another SUNY school. Today I got a call saying that I was accepted into the union once I pass the physical. Now I'm stuck in between a rock and a hard place. I have NO idea what I'm gonna do. I need to decide before I register for spring classes. HELP!!!

An Nyc teacher doesn’t make that much. I would suggest teaching special Ed preferably on long island.

The local 3 office building is down the block from my house LOL. I hope you dont use drugs because you will get random drugs tests for as long as you are apprentice. You will be an apprentice for quite a while and you wont really start making good money until they upgrade your status. They will send you to sites they see fit and they will alternate your sites as necesarry. Besides all that you will have to go to union meetings as required and classes as well. This is mandatory and if you miss one day they make a big ass deal out of it. My next door neigbor is an apprentice in local 3 as well so most of this info is stuff I have heard from him. Its a pain in the add but when you become a "A Man" it will all be worth it.

As for teaching they pay for your final year in college and if you get lucky you may land a good spot but the chances are still when you are first starting out. You may end up in the worst hole school in new york so I hope you are prepared to deal with that. In New York LI schools pay the most but to be honest you would get more as a teacher in another state altogether. Search is google for a teachers salary chart. It varies from state to state and the figures are just an estimate but that should give you a better idea.

LOng Island teachers get paid assloads, especially if you have been around a while. Pyro has a point with special ed. MY friend does that and its her second year she makes upper 50's.
