So I (kind of) got a new job. (pg. 3)

I don't mind the drugtests. I stopped smoking weed almost a year ago (and six days strong on cigarettes). My dad is in the union also, so he's filling me in too on what to expect. Five years school before I become a Journeyman, union meetings every month for the first few years, etc. Pretty much what you said.

As for teaching, it would be ideal to work on Long Island, since that's where I'm from. I plan on going to my old high school and asking some of my old teachers how they got there. Thanks again guys for all your help. You all rock!

Still undecided!

I really don't think it will be hard for you to find a teaching job since you want to teach math.

Well, I've finally made my decision. Since the apprenticeship for the electricians union is here now, I've decided to go with that. I would have loved to become a teacher but that means a lot more school and I'm not guaranteed a job right away (even though some of you say it will be easy). Besides, it's really hard to turn down full benefits for my family (once I get one) and the money they pay. If I don't like it, then I can always do something else. But I'll cross that bridge if/when I get there. So this will be my last semester at Suffolk Community College. In between school and when I start working for the union (I start school in February for it), I'm gonna go back to working at Foot Locker in the Roosevelt Field Mall (not working there yet, so don't ask me for any discounts. I'll let you know!). I'd also like to thank everyone who gave me their personal experiences/opinions. You all definitly helped in my choice! Wish me luck!

haha Roosevelt Field, right near me on the ol' Island

Sounds like you made a choice you're happy with. That's the most important thing. ;)

Sorry to bring this thread back to life but I figured I'd give you guys an update. I got a phone call back in November saying that if I'm still interested to go for a physical on such and such date and if all went well I would start school in February. I took the physical a week or two after I received that call. I was a little worried at first about the drug tests (I don't do any illegal drugs but I was worried about something else that has to do with it). I didn't hear anything for about six weeks. My dad was asking the apprentices on his job what the process usually is like and they said they won't notify you UNLESS you don't pass the physical. Cool. Fast forward to this past weekend. Since I still didn't hear anything I still wanted my dad to call the apprentice committee to see if he could find out any info. On Saturday I got a letter from the apprentice committee saying that I have to attend a meeting for prospective apprentices on January 19th at the Industry Board Meeting in Queens! The letter also stated I will be receiving a letter from Empire State College telling me when I have orientation for their schooling. I finally got closure that I was in. So I requested that day off from work and today I got that letter telling me that I have orientation on January 18th. They're not gonna be happy when I tell them I need back-to-back days off. Oh well, I told them in the beginning that this was only gonna be a temporary job until I hear word from them (the apprentice committee). They knew damn well I was gonna leave in a few weeks. Well that's it. I finally know what's going on with my life! :) :) :)

Congrats! I am glad to hear that everything worked out for you! Get there a bit early. Parking is a bitch around the Union Hall area and if you park in the lot across the street you may get towed.

Alright, about two years ago I applied to apply to become an apprentice in Local 3. Local 3 is the electricians union in NYC. And yes, you have to apply for an application. My dad has been in the union for nearly 30 years so I figured I'd give it a shot and see what happens. Everything went well, including my interview which was so long ago I don't even remember the month. That went great. After I took the interview I was all ecstatic about becoming an electrician. The money is fantastic, FULL benefits for my family (when I get one), raise every year, the works. The downside is you work outside most of the yearand you wake up around 4:30am to be at work at 7am. During the time in between my interview and now I decided that I might want to become a math teacher. I enrolled in school at a local community college with the intentions of graduating from there and going to another SUNY school. Today I got a call saying that I was accepted into the union once I pass the physical. Now I'm stuck in between a rock and a hard place. I have NO idea what I'm gonna do. I need to decide before I register for spring classes. HELP!!!

go with local 3 cos if you dont and teaching aint for you, you will never get asked again to go to that local..whereas if you take the electrican job and it dont work out you can always fall back on teaching and also you will have a load of money in the bank from electrical work...also if you go into teaching after a few years of doing electrical you will still be a qualified electrician and be able to supplement youre piss poor teaching wages by doing electrical side jobs...you will be a teacher/electrician...rather than a teacher/broke bastid.....

as for working outside,,you can always wrap up warm for the cold and you will never work in the wet and in the summer you wont give a flying cos youll be too busy watching walk past the site wearing next to nothing.....as a teacher you will be banged up in a class room like it or not all year round with a class full of stinking bedwetters.........

so you wanna teach maths...start by "doing the math"...and if you take the teacher job you deserve to be bitch slapped...

Thanks for all your support and input! I really appreciate it :) I usually park in the shopping center across the street. It costs something like $1/hr so it's not that bad.

As expected, my job wasn't thrilled when I told them my schedule had to be changed for next week. Oh well, it doesn't bother me any. I told them this would be happening so they can't say I didn't tell them. They should have been looking for someone to replace me when I came back!

Why don't you go work for the union and see about going to school part time? If you decide you hate working as an electrician and you still have your heart set on teaching, you can work on your degree while in the union and then leave when you finish school. That's what I would do!

If you can't schedule courses around your work schedule, you should check out some online schools. There are some pretty good ones out there.

Hope this helps! :)
