I've been listening to trance for about three years now.. I've stopped listening to everything else and now trance is all I listen to. Well anywayz, I hear friends that dont understand trance make stereotypes about the music. Here's some of the stuff I have heard...

1.Why do you like trance, isnt it the same song over and over?
2.Trance all sounds the same.
3.Only s listen to trance.
4.Isnt trance only for white people?
5.Trance is only for those weird ass people on drugs...

Yea I know, some funny huh? Well we all have heard this kind of stuff from friends. Whats some of the stuff you've heard?

i've only had two comments made to me.

one was from this guy that obviously has no idea what the whole scene is about, but i told him that i listen to trance, and then he was all like "yeah, but don't you like have to be high to listen to that stuff"... i was like whatever.. didn't even answer him..

the second... my buddy says that trance is gay, but then again, about 90% of things to him are gay...

most of my friends don't mind it, but they'd rather listen to somethin else.

being a part time taxi driver i get comments all the time...coz i make all the customers listen too all the latest trance tracks(promoting in i;))...comments i've had e.g 'is that, that garage music?'wtf 'do you have too take a xtc pill too listen too that ' 'it all sounds the same' 'don't that give you a headache' 'is that cd scratched' . However alot of people do give positive feedback until i tell them its trance hahaha...there like 'oh is it'! (haha that s erm!)

Yeah i also got critics on trance, mostly that was at school, those who listened to it were in minority of number, and at lunchtime we got the possibilty to put on some music in the last grade, and we often claimed that stereo to pu ton our cd's,we always got the same critics over and over again"that y music is always the same","that music is booooring","tha music isn't music","take away the computer and you have got nothing","those song can't be brought live",blablablabla,
but they always made one big mistake "that music is as commercial as Mc donalds",that really pissed us of,but we had our reply,"why would it be commercial? If you count the number of people here in the room that listen to trance, and than you count those who listen to hard rock and hip hop, where does that gets you?",the discussion ended there most of the time :)

This is a good thread..My friends say also that trance sounds the same. You know what, all of you trance haters out there...I am kind of glad that i am the only one who listens to trance..I am sort of an outcast, i like it...

once my sister told my mum that i was listening to music that makes u take drugs hahahaha that was ages ago when i was really young. It wasnt trance but jungle but u know what i mean.
Also a lot people think that what I listen 2 know is gabber. I like listening 2 HH and techno aswell. They think its all boring and its all the same.
It is not gabber. In the years of gabber i was fully against it. I hate gabber. So I get really pissed off when they say that Im listening to gabber. Wankers!!!!!!!!
But usually thesse people only here a sample of a song and dont bother 2 hear all of it. Then u cant understand trance esspecially if u dont know trance in the first place.

Yeah, that really pisses me of too man!!!!!!
I'm more into the harder sounds: techno/techtrance/hardtrance.... but when I listen some and my friends hear the music they will qualify it as Gabber or as Hardcore! That is soo disrespecting!!! I can't stand it!!! Well, I could tell them that to be qualified as Hardcore you need a 180 bpm or more... and the stuff I listen to never gets much higher than 140 bpm.... but they wont understand... :(

Later!

Yeah dude my point exactly
I think Ill take some gabber along next time and let them hear the difference of 180 and 140 bpms

haha, some lol!!! Gabber is the worst I have ever heard... No wonder that the people who listen to it need drugs...
I would need drugs, too, if I had to listen more than 5 minutes to that...
Nothing is worse than getting told that you are listening to Gabber when it is obvious that it is trance!!

I listen to trance at work a lot. The comments I have heard:

1. "You are listening to that same song AGAIN" (my playlist has about 1500 tunes so hardly :P)

2. "Isn't that too repetitive?"

3. "What's that noise? Don't you get a headache?"

4. "People dance stupidly in raves"

5. "Do you do E/gamma/cocaine/speed/whatever ?"

Haha. The girl who fixes my hair is very interested in the rave scene and we always chat about parties, music etc. but she has never been in a real rave party (I intend to take her with me some time). Anyway, she was surprised when I explained that there are several genres of electronica and also melodic/uplifting trance. She thought it was all that banging hardhouse stuff. In other words, most people have VERY limited idea about the music style.

Quite often clueless people assume that trance is plainly instrumental and there are no vocals or lyrics involved. They also associate commercial like ATB, Darude, Alice Deejay etc. hopeless crap to real trance which they have no clue about. For most people the word techno covers all genres of electronica and it's quite a job to explain that 2Unlimited has nothing to do with trance =)

On the positive side I have to say that most people are interested in knowing what this is all about if you market the music to them in the right way :) Like I said before, I get a good feeling if I manage to get someone new hooked into trance (hehehe, flashbacks of my dealer history.. NOT!) since I enjoy it so much that I suspect that the newcomers get similiar kicks in time. A big " you" goes to people who automatically judge others by their taste and refuse to find out what it's about. I'm not the world's biggest jazz-fan for example but I don't start spewing crap at anyone who is.

PLUR - live by it and make the world a better place :)

Everyone is just jealous!

Steve
