Screw USC!

Go Canes! Or should I say, Thug-U!

Too bad I could only get a partial scholarship there and couldn't afford the other $12,000 a semester or whatever I needed.

Damn private schools, lol.

heh nah USC is the best school in the country for music industry and the only other school I would consider is NYU for this field of study. i want to do entertainment law so its a farily niche subject field. Plus my mom went to USC so it runs in my blood. I definately can't wait to spin with some of you guys and partying is always good. Thanks for the help Kris I'm going to look around down there for a weekend and see what I like. I have a lot of friends and family members who used to or still currently live in LA and so they all have been recommending silver lake which is why i was initially drawn to live there.

I'd love a place thats chill and doesn't mind me spinning some nice grooves, but at the same time later in the evening ie after midnight or so the area quiets down a bit on most nights. Ideally i'd like a 2 bedroom apartment one as the bedroom the other as the studio/office etc. But i don't know if I can afford that.

Ah man, I wish I would have seen this thread earlier, as I am also a recent Alumn of USC :p

Kris I didn't know there were other Trojans on this board besides Bondor!

But yeah Psi sounds like you have gotten some good advice so far. Silverlake is a great area. Very hipster though, which I don't know if you would prefer, or not or not really care about. I have some buddies that had a house on Alvarado just past sunset. They didn't seem to mind the commute back and forth. They had a pretty sweet house there at a decent price. They are all in a band so they make lots of noise but haven't had any problems.

The area around USC is ghetto, but its really not as bad as lots of people say. There are lots of students there and lots of LAPD and DPS (the USC police) and as long as you don't do anything too stupid you won't have many problems. The good thing about living in the ghetto as a student is you can get away with alot more "criminal" stuff that you couldn't in say westwood :p

If you plan on spinning alot I would suggest looking for a house with some friends. Making noise in an apartment can be a bit of a problem. It all depends on your neighbors. if you move into an apartment with younger students it won't be as much as a problem, but then you have to deal with loud kids and partying all the time.

Are you planning on living with your girlfriend? I would suggest maybe getting an apartment the first year and then after makign some friends look for a house.

There are some nice apartments and lofts downtown. if you are interested i can give you a list of buildings. the prices have really skyrocketed recently though. and contrary to what was said earlier, there are some sweet bars downtown, such as Hotel Fig, the Standered (kinda expensive though), Broadway bar, Goldengopher, Casey's and several others i don't remember the names of.

My advice, if you are really looking to meet people and go to some USC parties, would be to live around USC. since you are double majoring, you will likely be spending lots of time on campus at classes and studyign at the library. its nice having campus just a skip and a jump away. if you want i can list the main streets people live on and what they are like.
I lived my junior year i lived on a house on the northside of Menlo. It was a ing blast. My senior year I lived in a house on 41st street, which is south of campus (the wrong direction to go). but I had no problems there. it was cheep and the house was great. USC is expanding in that direction and it will get safer and safer as time goes on.

anyway if you have any specific questions shoot them out. happy to help a fellow trojan.
I also took a bunch of music industry classes and if you have some questions on the content or the professors I will be happy to help you out.
I wish i were in your shoes. I've been done since May and I already am missing USC

Thanks for all the suggestions yeah. I'm open to living anywhere. The reason i dont' wanna live in an area that is kinda ghetto is that i have like 10k in dj gear and dont wanna lose it. I have insurance on it but i tend to buy nice things and so i don't want them disappearing dealing with break-ins etc. I really want to live someplace decent as where i live now is ty. I think a house would be tight but i'd kinda prefer not to have roomates as I haven't had the best luck so far. Plus with the GF i have a room mate so i'm less inclined to do that. Though i really wouldn't mind livining with some chill people to spin with or having people come over to spin with.

I'm not 21 so the bar scene is less interesting to me. I'll be 20 this december so it might be nice for next year which could work well. I plan on going to USC law school so i'd love to find a great apartment with a fairly chill landlord and stay there for like 4 or 5 years. After that i'll be a lawyer so my earning potential will be much greater.

My gf is going to be doing biostatistics masters or stastical masters and so she'll be doing a lot of work at USC too.

Basicly i'm looking for a nice nehiborhood preferably with something like a Trader Joes fairly close by. some decent eating and some decent bars for once i turn 21. Being a hip nehiborhood is fine but isn't a requirment. I have no problem driving a bit to get to campus if it means having a relaxed enviroment. I'm willing to spend more to get somewhere nice simply because i'll be there for a while. I probably wouldn't want to spend more than like 7 or 8 hundred a month which means like 1400-1600 a month for a 2 bedroom. But if something only required a bit more i would spend it. Having a nice place to live is very important to me.

Break-in's are really not a problem around USC. I had a good deal of DJ gear and I never had any problems. The biggest risk you can have to your stuff is living with some shady roomate.
Also if your not 21 yet and you want to go out drinking and so forth its better to be around campus.

But if your really keen on a nice neighborhood and having a trader joes (or WholeFoods) near by, the area around USC is probably not for you. the nicest place to shop around USC is Ralphs :p

Do you plan on living by yourself?

If you really dont care about commuting, and your keen on living in a nice area, I would actually suggest west hollywood or somewhere around La Brea.
The commute from there can be kinda long but there are some backroute shortcuts.

Of course Silverlake would also be good, but it still isn't the nicest of areas and would be a small commute (not as bad as from USC) to nice places to grocery shop.

You need the Westside in your life ;)

Santa Monica, Brentwood, Palms, Mar Vista... tons of Westside communities.

Chill people and vibe, near the beach, endless good food, malls, 5-25 minutes from everything cool in L.A., quiet at night, safe at night, near the major freeways. Not too far from Downtown, but definitely not as close as Silverlake.

http://www.westsiderentals.com = lifesaver

Good luck :)

thanks Kristina that sounds exactly like what i'm looking for. keep the suggestions coming guys i'm open to living anywhere somewhat reasonably close to usc but yeah upscale shopping is a must for me.

i'll be living with my girlfriend who will be the other roommate.
montie
the westside is probably what your looking for then.
I've heard good things about the website kristina suggested (except i think you need to pay).
just remember that, although it looks close on a map, it takes forever to get there in LA. :p
(this summer I worked at a place 7 miles away from where I lived and it took 30-45 min to get there and I was going the quick route)

I'd look into west hollywood, hanpark, culver city, mid-town, and santa monica (great place, but quite a commute though)
Psiweaver
are those commute times for anytime during the day or just during rush hour?

it all depends on the day and the on accidents and so forth. i had an internship in west hollywood this summer (santa monica and san vicente). i left from my house on 41st and figueroa. it took me on a good day 30 min to get there on a bad day 45 min. when i took the highway it was atleast an hour or so.
and this was a little after rush hour (I was supposed to be there by 10am)

but

at the end of the summer I moved into my friends house all the way out in Glendora CA (which is quite a ways north and east). from there it took me about an hour and a half to 2 hours to get to work everyday. i had to take the highway into USC (which normally wasn't too bad until i got into downtown) and then I took the same backroute to west hollywood.

Psiweaver
thanks for the advice. All of this is very helpful i'm starting to put together a list of places to check out.

I am a firm beleiver that you should always live close to work or school. Especially in LA! One hour each way of traffic messes with your head, makes you depressed, makes you angry! (I know trance music helps a little bit')

Even though USC is in a ghetto area, it's the school you picked so you'll get used to the ghettoness. The apartments in the area are full of college students so you'll get the whole experience.

Welcome to LA!
