As a matter of fact, I'm a nursing student and I'm going to specialize in palliative care.

Well, that gives you a right then, but still, this sort of thing does go on and will continue going on as it's a part of the personality society itself and no one is immune. I guess, I don't feel one way or another about it, so long is the doctor is sober when he sees me. The personal life of physician is not my business. My dad would never treat a patient while intoxicated, and he would tend to 60-70 hour work weeks, constantly being on call. He was a good ing doctor, even if his life wasn't perfect.

It's not about being an outstanding student. It's about taking one's role as a health care professional seriously. I have a very strong opinion that I think it's highly unethical/unprofessional to advise people on their well-being if you aren't healthy/well yourself...especially if your problem is drugs and alcohol. It impairs your thinking and judgement, ffs. That's not the kind of person I want giving me medical advice and/or treatment.

It's unacceptable, imo.

If they are not drunk/ed up while on the job, then what difference does it really make? I understand that, as a MD, you should be ready at all times to deal with emergency phonecalls and whatnot...but if the advice they give people is correct and sound, and people benefit from their services, despite the doctor's private or individual agenda, then what difference does it truly make? Just seems like kind of a high standard to hold people to...

I guess, in general though, I agree with you. :p

Just because it goes on, doesn't make it right. There's nothing to be said or done to justify that kind of behaviour in a health care setting.

I know what you mean, you're just being empathetic to people's problems. But this truly is a black and white issue. It IS a high standard, it's supposed to be. There's a very strong code of ethics for people in health care to adhere to. We have a large responsibility, and it should be taken seriously. People's LIVES, their HEALTH is partially in our hands.

I think that's one reason why so many Doctors get God complexes. :p

edit: woops, I thought I was replying to Fast Turtle. Ah well!

lol i remember back in the good ol "slylee cokehead days" i would send my ex off to work with some coke to keep him through the day cuz we still hadn't slept yet from the night before from partying in south beach (he has to work on saturday mornings for 5 hours). he's a chiropractor :wtf:

and one of his best friends is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in kidney transplants, and the guy is the biggest partier out of anyone i've known of heard of.

:stongue:

actually, it's kinda scary. :nervous:

I've known several asian and latino doctors in my lifetime kthx

So, like, when I drive my car, people LIVES ARE IN MY HANDS. Anytime I wanted to, I could drive up on the sidewalk and kill a few people, or if I am impaired by drugs or alcohol, my actions may not be intentional and I could end up killing pedestrians or hitting another car. This is why I would not drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol. So is the possibility that I might have to drive a car someday something that should keep me from doing drugs or getting drunk ever?

LOL. Wow, I can't remember the last time I made a comment about coked-up sex with my bf. That was ages ago. And no I don't do drugs once in a while. Not now that I'm back in school and becoming a nurse.

Nice try though.
