I just came back from seeing the new movie "Stanger Than Fiction" and there was a song that played during the scene leading up to the "big moment" and it was so gentle, simple and beautiful. Very peaceful. So I got home tonight and looked to see if it was on the soundtrack. Well indeed it was. The track is:
Vangelis - La Petite Fille De La Mer (The Little Girl From The Sea)
It was produced in 1973 and was on Vangelis' second album called "L'Apocalypse Des Animaux" ...
Vangelis, of course mose famous for the Bladerunner sountrack, has made some amazing music. This simple little 6 minute song struck a great chord in me. I can't believe this was made in 1973, that totally amazes me.
Anyway... has anyone else heard this song before and appreciate it like I do? |

| Like the track and a lot of Vangelis's music. He's right up there with Jean Michel Jarre IMO of great electronic artists/composers. He really lead the way for electronic music to rival that of classical and romantic music. Away from the overt experimentation to something more warm, human and identifiable with melodies and harmonies. If you like Vangelis, i'de definitely check out an artist i'm really into now called Amethystium. His new CD "Emblem" is a collection of his best tracks from his past three albums. I did a review on the CD Review forum a few weeks ago. |

True. I would probably put "Blade Runner Blues" in my all-time all-genres top10, it's such a masterpiece. The whole score is awesome of course, but "Blade Runner Blues" in particular. |

Heaven & Hell
aka: The Cosmos Soundtrack
Lovely.
(I kind of feel Tomita's a little better on the synth-classical style though) |

| I love most of his stuff. My dad has been a big fan since the beginning and has all his albums. 1492 ST is one of my favorites. |

Oh god, TA music discussion forum looks like heaven lately!!!Threads for minimal(at least something different),deep house, Steve Reich, Cure and finally Vangelis, i'm really astonished! It seems that some TAs know about good music in general!
To the discussion, yes Vangelis was a great electronic composer and pioneer of forward-thinking music. It's a shame though IMO, that people know only his big epic more new-agey 90s works like "voices", "conquest for paradise" and some more classic soundtracks like "bladerunner".This is bad in a way, because the current composer has some absolutely mind-blowing albums which are simply over-shadowed by some more famous sound-tracks and works."L'apocalypse des Animeaux" is a great example of this "over-shadowing".The album, released in 1972 has some perfect ambient works, reminiscent of the 90s(!!!) Here are 2 samples by this album other then "Le petite..."(the "sweet" tune that the threadstarter has stated...
"Creation Du Monde"

"La Mer Recomencee"

In a matter of fact, vangelis, having released something around 20+ albums from the beggining of the 70s, he was/is surely the greatest electronic musician out-there and yes i think he is much bigger then Jean Michel Jarre (yes who is great as well, but who he never reached the same artistic levels as Vangelis...e.g. See "Mythodea"-the soundtrack for the NASA mission on mars which is a proper majestic opera). While Jarre was always more "playfull" with what he was doing experimentally (both in sound and vision as one can see in his live-shows), vangelis was always more about the perfect structure, the emotions.Jarre was the "impressionist", Vangelis was the "Romantic". It's really useless to say more about this great artist...i can't resist (my usual it seems) temptation of posting some samples which are all coming from great albums...(oh and yes "Bladerunner" is still one of his best albums. But i can't decide if it's THE best.)
Album- "Albeido-0.39" (exerimental electronic album from 1973.
"Alpha" (this melody could be a massive trance lead-line)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
"Nucleogenesis part-1" (cool electro from 1973?!?)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
Album-"Spiral" (This album was released in 1975 and it's unbelievable how close is to trance...i haven't found anything from the 70s sounding so similar to electronic music produced in the 90s.Not even the so-much-mentioned Kraftwerk).
"Spiral" (one of the first ever sequencers used)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
"3+3" (first epic trance tune!?)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
Album- "Opera Sauvage"(my favorite ambient-new-age-downtempo album of all times-"the soundtrack that wasn't soundtrack".Amazing album from 1979.)
"L'Infant"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
Album- "Chariots of fire" (yes the main theme is extremely over-played, even used in comedies BUT this whole soundtrack is a goosebumb-inducing machine.Ethereal soundtracky electronic brilliance form the beginning of the 80s.)
"Five Circles"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
"100 metres"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
"Jerusalem"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
Album- "Antarctica" OST (Beautifull album from the beggining of the 80s. Epic, strange and melancholic.)
"Theme From Antarctica"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
"Life of Antarcica"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
"Direct" (underrated album but one of Vabgelis greatest.Fantastic electronic music from the end of the 80s.The album that defined 90s new-age and hugely influenced bands like Enigma and Sacred Spirit.)
"Elsewhere"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
"First Approach"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
"Integalactic Radio Station"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/clip...7202128-1470202
There are some great albums that i didn't mention like "China"(70s), "Heaven and Hell"(70s), "The City" (90s), "El-Greco" (dark byzantine ambience?mystical 90s work) and others that don't come to mind...and yes these samples from amazon are unfortunately very small. But i hope to make you go out-there and search for the albums of this great alectronic pioneer.
p.s. As spirit-5 said, Amethystium is very good new-age music coming by some talented young-man from norway. His first album called "Odonata" was an amazing piece of work. It was released in 2002 (if i remember?) an features some amazing epic hooky melodies...So, yes dig his albums as well... |
