So hubby got the Canon Xti and is now bugging me about what lense to get. Should I just let him buy one of the L lenses and if so, which ones are best. Mostly portrait shots, some outdoor stuff..he's beyond an amateur :) |
Absolutely the L lens is the one to go with if you can dish out the cash...here's an excellent website that tells you anything and everything you ever wanted to know about the Canon lenses.

For what you're describing I'd recommend the same one I have 24-70mm L lens.

Hey, better they take an extra week and do it right rather than rush it and screw it up.
But when they start taking 6 or 8 weeks then they need to hire some new techs.
For me I'm still using my Nikon F80 with 24-85 AFS lens. It's been all over the world with me and I love it.
Will upgrade to Digital as soon as they all go to full size sensors so you don't have the 1.5 factor issue and more pixels.
Really want to be able to post digital pics though without scanning! |

If you have the cash - Canon 5D is a full frame digital camera. |

L-series is canon's best. sure it would be nice to own an L but its not really necessary. basically with an L-series, the optics are set up so that you get the photo quality of a fixed focal length lens in a zoom lens.
ive been using the kit lens with my XT (18-55mm f/3.5) since i got the camera and its doing just fine but i will need to upgrade to something with f/2.8 and roughly the same focal length for better club shots as f/2.8 allows more light than f/3.5
a good option when your husband picked up the xti would have been to get it with the upgraded lens (17-85mm f/4.0). henrys has that option available. that is a very nice lens for daily use. |

chinamon, I just wanted to let you know that the sensor on the XT and 20D are not the same. The XT is noisier than the 20D at ISO400 and up.
My plans: sell my 20D-550EX-17-35, get a Canon L 24-70-580EX and the 5D if I can't wait till february cause thats when I heard the updated 5D will come out! I can't make up my mind. |

hmm, many of the websites that i read say the sensors are the same. henrys also said the same thing to me when i was there to have them look at my camera before i brought it to canon for repair. |

its similar, but not the same, I have a friend with that camera, and whenever we go around shooting pics in town, the difference is visible.
the difference is the same as a 20D/30D to a 5D in the noise category.
Never trust a seller (henrys) he'll always tell you what you want to hear ;) |

true.. but i remember reading on a few review websites that it was the same sensor. oh well, i shoot at iso800 and i dont see very much noise, at least not with my eyes but im sure the 20d/30d would be much better. |

i shoot at 800 too in clubs, our pics look the same, but i'm sure if we compared 100% crops we'll see a bit of difference.
btw, xt has a 8.0, and 20D a 8.2 mp sensor. there's at least ONE thing different:tongue3 |
