DJing and how it effects your life (pg. 2)
View this Thread in Original format

Well, I remember when I would listen to music I would try to sync it to other things that I was looking at, or my surroundings. Like watching things that went along with the beat of the music, like the windshield wipers for instance. I was always relating things in the world with beatmathing and trying to snyc them together. It was very weird. Does not happen much anymore. I think it was happening alot when I was learning to beatmatch.

Um, I like to think I am opened minded to different music, and that djing has made me openminded to different types and styles of music, but most other music does nothing for me. I like classical and some soft rock, but besides that it is all electronic music for me, mostly Trance. It is really the only music (besides classical) that will move me like music is suppossed to do. In all honesty, its only been a trance tune or classical tune that have been able to tear me up (not trying to sound like a sissy, or get mushy, lol). So, I don't know if djing has changed my taste in music when I started it, I'd have to say no.

Anyway, sorry for the long post. Guess I got alot on my mind or something. :)

Rock On,

Mike

yea, it's not that i don't listen to or care about other djs mixes, it's a great source for new tunes

when in the club, if i'm not playing i'm usually working the room, walking around talking to people, shaking hands and handing out cds
i notice there's a beat playing but i'm not paying attention to the mixing

it's becomes social, if there's a screw up then we might take notice of the mix and maybe rib the dj a bit if we know them but there's not that "you suck, get off the decks", like a sour mix comes through, another dj and i might make eye contact to make sure we're hearing what we're hearing then shrug and continue on our way

but then again i'm not usually playing with inexperienced djs that much anymore, i'm usually billed alongside calgary's more reputable djs so being out and hearing a trainwreck isn't that common anymore

It has given me a whole new appreciation for what a good DJ is doing, and an equal level of disdain for those clearly half assing their efforts.

i spent all my money on gear and i still owe 500 bucks to my mom (for the monitors) lol

It has affected me in many ways, most of which have been listed, but the one that really matters to me is my hearing loss, I do consider myself lucky as its not that bad right now and I've been exposed to louder than loud music since I was about 12, but I truly can't help it, I know I should wear earplugs, but it ruins it for me, I really am addicted to having music loud.

I have spent alot of time and money threw my life on DJing, and I have had some bad things happen because of it and I have had high school grades partly ruined due to the time spent, nearly failed my college courses as well, and of course my hearing damage, but after thinking of all the bad that has come from it, I do not regret it one bit, DJing is part of me and a way for me to play and express feelings with other people, it may sound stupid, but I really am addicted to music in general, not just one genre but many, its a universal language that can speak to anyone and change them for a moment when listened for what it is, I know this all sounds mad and that I'm on some killer drugs right now, but just thought this is the right thread for something like this.

Is the "effects" in the title of this thread supposed to be funny or are you a poor speller :toothless :toothless

+1 TOTALLY!

Doesn't sound mad at all bro. I know exactly what you mean and I am sure a lot, if not most, can agree with you. It definitely has become a huge part of my life as well and most of my life revolves around it. It is a great thing to be a part of and if it is something you have a passion for, well... there is no shame in that.

+1. DannyO, I agree with both you and doombot. Music is real big part of my life too, it's kind of taken over the past 2 years, it's definitely taken lots of time and $ (no worries though, it's totally worth it!). I think it helps define me as a person...I'd seriously go crazy without it. Anytime I have the chance I'm listening to something.

You know that feeling you get when you're at a live set or party and you see someone else who is just as into it as you are? You know exactly why they're there - for the music. It's like an unspoken bond. I love that.

Most importantly, I appreciate EDM way more than when I was just a listener. The amount of effort that goes into putting together a good set even if it's an hour. The joy of spinning for the sake of enjoyment.

Course, I learn to be helluva more critical of myself than I already am. :D

Oh my God, same happens to me. The turn signal and windshield wipers on my car just aren't fast enough for trance.:stongue:
