Has anyone else heard anything about this!? It looks to be absolutely amazing! Just think of the handiness, being able to throw on any track you want, and not by having to use a cdj either, you can use actual vinyl. A guy I know saw Ritchie Hawtin using a prototype of the system in London last year, and said it was one of the best sets he's ever seen of his, largely because of the amount of versatility he could put into the set without having to have 5 crates of records with him...I think they open up a lot of possibilities for a huge amount of people.

I'm very interested in these...and the best part is that Stanton is hoping to put em out for around $500 (US).

Thoughts? Opinions? :D

looks amazing. would work well in my setup in my room, considering my pc is 3 ft from my tt's. would not be that great if you had to go do a set somewhere, and don't have a laptop.

Well yea, this is like the 10000000th post now about final scratch.
It's not going to cost you 500, you will also need a separate laptop or a tower where you will need to run this special OS that never crashes and like that. You will have the program for final scratch on that pc, and you can't install anythign else on that OS. But yea, i'm pretty sure that final scratch will replace cdj's at clubs. Pro DJs won't use these, and again, don't forget about the copyright...it's gonna be pretty much the same story as there was/is with cdj's right now...

Peace

what? you have to run a special OS on the computer? i always thought the special OS was built into the final scratch machine and all the comp does is feed the machine with mp3's. lol oh well....

EDIT - ok i checked out the site again and you can have both the special OS to co-exist with windows and linux. so its not that big of an issue.

No,
that's what the separate laptop/tower is needed for...

JUST BUY VINYL! and if you're a CD dj, buy the actual singles! in my opinion, playing a burned copy of a mp3 that you don't actually own is cheating!.. cos then no1 has respect for the dj's that actually have the good or hard to find tracks in their crates!

Just read the specs for this thing...

The software for Final Scratch runs in Linux on a PC. There is no "special OS", just standard Linux (plus some drivers & the program). The CD-ROM that comes with it is Linux bootable, meaning you can just drop in the disc and boot your computer into Linux.

This means you can use your existing PC or laptop to run the software.

Three ways to do it:
1) Re-partition your hard drive to do dual-boot for Windows or Linux. You select your OS from a menu when you start the computer.
2) Boot Linux from the supplied CD-ROM.
3) Install VMWare software that lets you run Linux in a window in Windows NT/2000/XP. There may be compatability problems with USB w/ VMWare, however.

In any case you can have both OS' available on one machine and can share your MP3's in both systems. (Linux will read Windows partitions.)

If the system is accurate enough for Pro use, I can see definite advantages. You could encode all your records to MP3 and practice spinning them from your PC, eliminating wear on your originals. You could also practice spinning tracks you do not have [yet] (this gets into the whole copyright thing...). For instance, if you have a 12" on order you can practice spinning it before your 12" arrives.

This is a very cool system for $500 (if it works). I'm very curious as to how popular it will get. I can definitely see it replacing CDJ's.

I hate Final Scratch. What's wrong with sticking to plain old trustworthy vinyls? The thrill of having to fight for the rarest EPs and records and white labels is what makes DJ-ing DJ-ing. Imagien if everyone got their hands on a copy of the Southern Sun mp3 and contrived to play it set after set after set. Southern Sun wouldn't be Southern Sun anymore, would it.

If you're wondering why they would want to use Linux rather than Windows, it's for two reasons.

One, you don't want to be in teh middle of a set in a club at 3am and suddenly you get a nice big BSOD and your computer keels over and dies, as happens often on M$ OS's.

And two, Linux is free. If you were to use Windows, then in a club environment it would be considered commercial use, and each computer that used it would have to have its own licence for every venue it plays at, and it would cost each DJ an absolute fortune to have a licence for his or her laptop at every venue they might play at.

You can dual boot OSs. You can have WinXP and BeOS on the same machine. (Easiest way is to have 2 HDs.) Install Windows onto the primary (/dev/hda0) and put BeOS on the slave (/dev/hdb0). Install LILO and you're done.

I'm not sure what flavor of *nix Finalscratch will use. Linux (Redhat/Slackware), BeOS, whatever.

are Great Outdoors and I the only ones that see it like this? I didn't want to single out just vinyl dj's becuase I can have respect for CD dj's that go out and by CD singles.. but i think its cheesy to play mp3's that you burned onto a disc or w/ final scratch, play off your computer!
