Hi guys well I've finally saved enough cash for a new computer but the problem is, I do not really know what to get. I want to make sure that i get parts that will work together and I don't have a lot of knowledge on the subject. So I'm wondering if you guys can help with some suggestions. I think I want to get Dual Dual Core 3ghz xeons processors but I do not know what kind of Motherboard to get. I also need 2 hard drives and 2 gigs of ram to start.Basically I need everything new. Can you guys tell me the best parts to go with those processors that have been tested and are known to work?? much much thanks. Im looking forward to working on one of these new beasts......
p.s. I basically want the top of the line Mac Pro but not Mac...since its using all Intel parts i just want those parts....or similar |

i think we've all built our own systems before but i swear everytime i buy one that's prebuilt the system runs better, more energy efficient and quieter!
anyways, aparently newegg isn't selling my system anymore that i bought in august:
acer:
4200 dual core, athlon x2
2gig ram
400gig HD
8 USB 2.0's
2 Firewire's

that is a in steal of a price though |

Dude what do you need a pair of dual core Xeons for exactly? Are you going to be doing 3D rendering of movies? lol. |

Get one of the new intels; e6400 or e6300. I havnt got one just yet but they seem like awsome CPUs, especialy for their price. |

E6600, 4mb cache :) |

I dont realy want to hijack the thread with it but alot of benchmarks show that the extra 2mb cache doesnt speed things up just as much as intel says it does (suprise).
Then again, if you got the money get the e6600. |

i find this hard to believe. maybe the custom pcs you had in the past were just crap? :P
i would build it yourself. |

Core2Duo E6600, end of discussion, next question! :)
The Xeons are meant for server-type applications, not sure the huge pricetag will translate to better performance over the Core2Duos when it comes to music production... but Intel duals sure are the way to go
oh, and unless you're a sampling freak, 2 gig DDE2 RAM is plenty (synthesis does not require alot of ram, samplers with huge soundbanks do) |

as someone who worked building computers for 2 years, for a start, it's very important that you don't just take the obvious things into account. don't JUST look at the cpu/motherboard etc, that is the easy part. the cooling system and case you use are probably the part you should give the most attention. make sure you get a case with internal sound absorbption, a fanless power supply, fanless videocard (or mount a heatpipe cooler to the card), replace the chipset fan with a good fanless heatsink and use super quiet cpu fan - zalman is usually the best. if you don't do that, you'll have an annoying buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz in your room and it will put you off alot.
just quickly having a look around... things like this are worth looking into:
case: http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2549.htm
cpu fan: http://www.pccasegear.com/prod4310.htm
power supply: http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2570.htm
i would take 512mb less ram and a slightly slower cpu with good sound deadening over the alternative any day. i mean... after all this IS a music pc right? :P |
