I actually wasn't the biggest fan of this movie. I saw it and enjoyed it a lot, but the ending with the clone stuff just didn't make sense in my head. He killed himself to win the bet. That's illogical. He doesn't get to savor the victory. And he could have easily had an amazing trick without killing himself everytime. Even better tricks than the one he had.
But I get that they wanted to set it up with the whole murder thing.
Still, was a good movie. 7/10, probably.
I preferred The Illusionist a lot more. Beautifully shot, Edward Norton, Philip Glass soundtrack, 10/10. |
i think the story, outside the science of it was to show that a man would go to any length to out do his rival and he'd even go "kill himself, if that's what it takes" (a line from the movie). ego driven tragedy ! |

No, no, I get that.
It's just the fact that he could have out-done his rival even better without killing himself that annoys me :p |

How could he have not killed himself? Otherwise he would have had a whole lot of clones running around. Besides, he never actually killed "himself". Towards the end, Hugh Jackman says (paraphrasing): "you have no idea what it feels like, to stand there every night and not know whether you're going to be the man in the box or not". This never really made sense to me. Basically, he implied that he suffered in the water box. That was never the case, because he always got transported to the back of the theatre while the clone drowned. However, I really, really liked this movie. Superb acting and storyline. |

When he did the cloning he didn't know if he would end up in the water or not. In a way he did so every time, but his identical clone didn't. So he died and survived every time. |

If he'd ended up in the water, then he wouldn't be alive to tell the tale or remember being in there. |

That's what I thought at first, but here's the kicker:
If he gets transported to the back of the theatre and the clone dies, then "he" is actually the first clone. The very first time he gets into the machine he shoots the body who gets transported. So either his clone shot him after the first time he did the trick in practice or he drowned himself.
Yeah, he could have had a whole lot of clones running around. That would be an amazing trick, he could have appeared to teleport all over the theatre.
I think what happened was that the clone had identical memories and identical personality and everything to him (it was a pure clone), but regardless, "he" who got strangled at the end (that's how he died, right? I can't remember the ending exactly) was definitely not the original him. The original him either got shot by a clone or drowned himself in the water the first time he did the trick.
He could have easily just made one clone of himself and then done crazy elaborate tricks exactly like the other two did. Or made two clones and done the tricks better than they did. They could have all lived out in the world, the other brothers made it pretty clear that that was possible.
Fantastic acting, definitely. Great storyline, too. I just think the ending was trying to be too messed up and could have both made sense and been better. |

based on the recent trailers i've seen, it looks to be one of those movies where it plays with your mind, and makes you wonder if the movie is set in the regular or dream world? something along that nature. i am sure this movie is going to make you try to use your mind to understand the movie flow. |
