Ethnic Trance

This is bridging off from my Psy fans post, but is there any obscure ethnic themed trance? There's are Norwegian death metal band named Einherjer that specializes in Viking Metal, and there is a band called Running Wild that is known for pirate metal. Rock music aside, is there any psy trance, or just trance in general that are themed around different cultures? Like perhaps pirates, vikings, middle eastern (sitars), russian (balalakias), aborigine (didgeridoo's), South American (that dosen't have a damn nylon guitar), etc? Perhaps something that is obscure enough to be in 3/4 time? You all know what i mean. Would it be possible to make a list on the thread? Tranceaddict houses an incredibly diverse group of people from different parts of the world with different cultures and religions. I refuse to believe that there is no trance to support these ethnicities. Imagine the possibility when someone asks:

"...what the hell are we listening to?"
"oh, this is Viking trance you waste of life."

these are some not so decent
examples:
Tiesto - He's A Pirate (Tiesto Remix)
De Jonge & Beijerinck - Didjerrydoo

How much more can we add on? This I would like to see.

Um you'll find much more with new age and world music, as far as ethnic stuff, than trance. Goa trance has these elements, and there are plenty of ambient and downtempo like this. You should check out Deep Forest, B-Tribe, Afro-Celt Soundsystem, Banco de Gaia, Kitaro, Robert Miles (post 23 AM), some Enigma stuff, some Amethystium, some Delerium.

Loop Guru!
DJ Mission
Aphex Twin - Didgeridoo
Kamasutrance vs Nemesis Divine - Rangila

Dido Spirit 5 on Afro Celt Soundsystem the're really good.

I suppose you are looking for producers which incorporate tribal and ethnic elements in their tunes. I would recommend the following:

Etnoscope - www.etnoscope.com
Giddabush - www.giddabush.com
Tegma - www.tegmatekk.com

then there are the real ethnic groups such as Midival Punditz, Karsh Kale, Adam Sheikh, Transglobal Underground etc.

one of my favourites this year: Karsh Kale - Distance (Banco De Gaia remix).
Lilith
Someone just gave me a copy of Shpongle- Nothing lasts
Probably class as a world music album if it had too have a label.

I plan to make a track with excerpts of the Koran with voices shouting 'Allah Akhbar!' in the background, the flip side is going to involve Gregorian Chants by the fifth order of Thomas Aquinas.

On a serious note if my memory serves me right, Mandrake - Universal Soul has an ethnic feel too it. Mory Kante - Yeke Yeke has an African feel too it.

I've presented the same ideas for some producing friends.
I got some nice samples which could be used if you are interested.

I don't know of any "viking trance" but i once i had a friend who who used to listed to "viking metal and pagan black metal"!!! i remember the names of the bands as well...Einherjer, Enslaved, Falkenbaach,Mythodiin,Summoning... the vocals were horrible (orc singing anyone?) and the lead quitars were pure noise at times but damn...it had some cool epic themed synths-lines and folk-loric passages that gave a "fairy-talish" atmosphere to the songs. You can't find this in trance unfortunately, "trance" in general is too mainstream for that...heh

No "pagan","epic" or "viking" trance exists unfortunately but i'm aware that lots of psy-trance groups have these eastern influences. IMO it sometimes sounds terribly wrong. In greece that kind of trance was overproduced in the 90s. It got the ironic name "tsiftedelic (!)- trance" form the greek eastern influenced traditional dance "tsifteteli" and "psychedelic" lol pretty horrible but lots of israeli projects had this kind of kitch influence. (and europeans as well but performed in a more dark way)

Concluding, if you want eastern influences check-out most psy-trance reccomendations. A kind of medieval "pagan" perspective can be found in these melodic trance tunes...

Solid Globe- "Black Wood"

Solid Globe vs. Nickelson- "Crystal Water"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF194957-01-02-01.mp3

I quite like these two tunes but they went very unnoticed. They can be both found in a double-sided 12" released in fundamental.(Solid Globe is always quality!)

That's all for trance. If you want more "real" ethnic influences then i'll agree with spirit-5 and suggest you go explore "new-age" music. Bands?

Enigma (No Comments)
Deep Forest (the second album "boheme" had some amazing east-european influences)
Era (Gregorian bombastic new age!Massive choruses, orhestral passages and epic themes over a slow bit...very good at times. It's like King Arthur and Merlin, or even a group of drunk monks having fun in the Chill-out room!)
B-Tribe (latin american new age)
Amethystium (lots of ethnic influences from around the world, but i think the synth atmospheres and lead-line refer to a kind of "lord-of-the-rings" kind of thing. Very beautifull and ethereal)
Adiemus (Karl Jenkins merges playfull non-sense choruses, tribal drums, flutes and orchestras. Strange but good...in an experimental way)
Mythos (sweet, sometimes cheesy-ambient soundscapes merged with lots of ethnic influences. Sometimes it can sound banal, sometimes its more adventurous but good overall)
Delerium (no comments. The most framous new-age group in the trance community, probably due to the extensive remixes of many of their tunes- especially silence. To tell you the truth, i quite liked the albums before "karma" but after that...very "cheesy new-age by numbers". Dig their older albums though. "Semantic Spaces" its good and has lots of ethnic influences)
Sacred Spirit (the famous sacred spirit merging ambience with traditional american influences)
