My computer crashed :(

So Monday night my comptuer crashed. The last time I did a backup of my entire hard-drive was back in August. So I've lost 4 months worth of pictures, documents, mp3s...everything :(
The mp3s I don't care as much about...but being a picture whore I've lost emense amounts of pictures, many of which I can't get back. It'll take me a long time to get pictures back from Labour of Love etc (having to sort through review threads), but I don't post all of my pictures on the internet, and thus I've lost a lot of personal pictures...many of which I was going to use to make a scrapbook with.
Even worse are my word documents. I've done 6 essay's/major assignments so far this year and I've lost all of my work. Those 6 are handed in, but it's always important to keep copies of everything. Continuing in bad news, I stayed home this weekend to work on 2 major final assigments...I love ALL of that data :(
My dad is a comptuer whiz, and together with Cale they've tried everything under the sun, but can't get my data back. I was surprised b/c usually a miracle happens and my dad always gets my stuff back. He gave me a brief lecture on how I should use the USB pen drive and the CD-RWs he gave me to back up my newest data everyday, even if I don't do master backups of my hard drive as frequently. I definatly learned my lesson.
I'm so despressed :(
Have any of your computer's crashed that resulted in you losing a lot of significant data? Not just mp3s and silly things you can get back.
le sigh :( |

You don't need to be so sad you can get them back. Simply dig out your hard drive and get an enclosure for it. I can almost guarantee you can get all your files...unless your hard drive crashed in which case you're in a pickle.
My guess though is that it wasn't the hard drive.
The enclosures connect with a USB to any computer.
Cheers! |

Wow cale, im so unimpressed with your comp skills right now
even in extreme conditions u could install a botched version of windows right overtop of the old corrupt one and rescue the files onto cd
edit: unless your harddrive stopped working completely then you might be screwed without going to a data recovery place |

is the hard drive making some weird noises? : yes, you're ed unless you fork 300$++ for some specialized help.
if not, you can use a program called GetBackData which saved my ass more than a few times. |

bummed hard drive? bummed Windows?
Has the drive been formatted yet? Are you still using the same hard drive?
About a year ago my external hard drive (home to all my music) crapped out and after a format, I was able to recover the data with

Sorry...I should have noted...the hard drive is ed. My dad has put it in a number of other computers and the computer won't even recognize it. It says that it needs to be formatted and asks if I want to format it.
When it first happened. MSN froze and I couldn't even shut down my computer so I pressed the restart button. It came up saying it couldn't access the boot record and to press control alt delete to restart. Cale thought it was originally a problem with the boot record and came up with a couple ways to fix that...i.e. by putting the original Windows XP cd in and starting up in recovery mode and then putting in some password.
However, we tried that and we couldn't get it to start up period. It kept locking up. That's when my dad tried putting the hard drive in another comptuer. |

The drive hasn't been formatted yet. My dad's still working on it on another computer. He gave me a different hard drive to work off of temporarily. (Slow as !)
It's defniatly the hard drive though...not the operating system like we had originally thought. |

I'm not at home...but not that I recall.
The lights were on too saying that the computer was diong stuff...but it would take forever and either lock up or just say nothing was on the hard drive.
But no wierd noises that I ermember. |
